Aren't most phones black? or white. Maybe that could be the sequel.

Maybe that could be the sequel. I can think of a title for the third film, but I am not sure how PC it is.

I thought it was just okay. You can tell they were trying to cash in on the IT train, setting it in the 80s(?) for no particular reason and really trying to push the envelope with the children characters, which just comes off as the writer/director going "let's show little kids calling each other 'cocksucker' and bludgeoning each other's skulls with rocks because we're edgy". Unfortunately the child actors aren't quite as natural as those in IT, nor is their dialogue ("your arm is MINT"). Luckily Ethan Hawke is there keeping it afloat. I haven't seen him play someone this deranged or creepy before but he's pretty good.

I like the general idea of the movie and it has very creepy atmosphere, but the script needed some work. Ethan Hawke is effective. but he is barely given anything to do. He just shows up once in a while and delivers some creepy dialogue. The mask is doing half the work. Why is the James Ransone character even in the movie? They also could have edited out the sister character and it wouldn't have changed much of anything. Her dialogue and acting is the worst in the movie. The writing of her character is just bad across the board imo. 6.5/10

Indeed, a lot of things ended up being pointless in this movie. This can be used to build tension, ie "you think he's gonna escape this way but oh no, it didn't work" like the whole lock thing, but the wrong house cliche and Ransone getting Richard Farnsworth'd come at the very last second. Then some ghost advice like digging through the floor is completely forgotten about. Then there's their dad. Jeremy Davies did a good job, but again, what did he add? Especially the belt stuff - the father and Ethan Hawke both use one on their children, but nothing is made out of that. Again it felt like the filmmakers just going "look how hardcore we are showing a 10 year old girl get the shit beaten out of her. Remember the creepy dad in IT? That guy's a pussy next to our creepy dad".

I felt the movie was suggesting that Jeremy Davies was going to become a better father after what happened to his kid (the movie is obviously making a comparison between him and Ethan Hawke's character), we already see a bit of change with his character when him and his daughter have that scene in the living room later in the movie. I like that stuff, but they just don't flesh it out at all. I like the stuff with the daughter having dreams about the kidnapper, but the movie just doesn't tie it into the movie very well. It is more of just an afterthought. The movie should have just focused entirely on the kid, the father and the cops. Then used the spare time to add more depth to the father and write more interesting stuff for Ethan Hawk's character to do. When the movie focuses on just the stuff with the kid, Ethan Hawke and the black phone it is at it's best. There is a very interesting horror movie in here somewhere.

I would have guessed it was based on a Stephen King novel if I didn't know it wasn't. Apparently it is based on a short story by a writer named Joe Hill, so I guess maybe he is the one borrowing from Stephen King. I almost want to read the short story and see if it ties all plot threads together better.
