I heard about this years ago and watching 11.22.63 (2016) reminded me of it. I never saw it but I believe it's either a short film or TV episode and from what I understand a Englishman uses a time machine which I believe can only be used once to kill Hitler before the war. When he comes back he's shock to find that the war still happened and Britain lost and is now NAZI occupied. It seems that killing Hitler didn't stop NAZI war goals. It just allowed Hitler to be replace by a more competent leader.
Might have even been a short story.
EDIT I checked out The Sound of Thunder and Cradle of Darkness and it not them. Thanks though.

Well not sure these help... It sounds similar to "A Sound of Thunder". But no Hitler. A butterfly is stepped on and changes time. Upon return an awful President is in power.
It also sounds like an episode of the 2002 "The Twilight Zone" in which Katherine Heigl goes back in time to kill Hitler as a baby. Presumably she gets him and drowns herself holding him. Only we find out it was another baby altogether. And it was all for nothing.

Not familiar with that one... But this is kind of similar... In the end, the biological baby is killed without the parent's knowledge, but another baby is obtained and replaces him, and the parents are none the wiser. "Hitler" still rises to power and history remained the same.

Sounds like this episode of Twilight Zone where they kill the wrong baby Hitler.

It's a fixed timeline. It's a predestination paradox. The replacement was the "Hitler" you have always known.
