All Holidays Matter.

My Lovely Wife is of Norwegian ancestry and is justly proud of it. Go Vikings. My sister is Wicca so I get the Yule greeting from her every year. I prefer to celebrate the season as minimally as possible. We put a wreath on our door - and that's it. We are going to have pizza for December 25 dinner.

Our two sons are thousands of miles away (we are in New Mexico, son #1 lives in London U.K. and son #2 in Upstate New York), cousins, uncles, aunts - we hardly know who the are. Family gathering? Fugidaboudit. Who needs it? Our MAGA relatives would probably just infect us with the Omicron variant. 

When you live on the edge of the high desert, your perspective changes.

I’m late on this thread, but I have to post my second-favorite winter solstice poem (my favorite is, of course, Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”):

The Shortest Day

So the shortest day came, and the year died,
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.

They lighted candles in the winter trees,
They hung their homes with evergreen,
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.

And when the new year’s sunshine blazed awake,
They shouted, reveling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us—listen!

All the long echoes sing the same delight,
This shortest day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.

And so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.
