My first movie of 2022 happened to be a first-time viewing - the 32 year old romantic fantasy Ghost.
And I must say I was thoroughly impressed with what I saw. An interesting and successful blend of different genres - fantasy, drama, romance, thriller, comedy and even a tiny dollop of horror - coupled with strong, believable characters, an effective combination of laughs and tear-filled moments and a delightfully funny performance by Whoopi Goldberg make for one hell of an entertaining watch. I'd like to think of this as an origin story for her character of Guinan on Star Trek.
I can't think of a single bad thing to say about this movie.

I agree, it's a great movie. Scores highly in all the departments of drama/fantasy/romance/comedy.

A great film. Every single part is iconic and speaks volumes of theater. It's in my top 100 all time films, and often makes the top 40 if I make out the list.
There is theater in every scene. And much more than meets the eye. The greatest moment is near the end, when the man who stole so much from our hero is in the dead zone, and our hero knows what is coming for him, and expresses actual compassion for the villain's plight. That humanity is the climax of the film.
Great blend of action, drama, and comic relief.
It was a risk taking venture. Totally anti Hollywood in its lack of negativity. There's still negativity and bad guys winning out at times, just not enough for the Hollywood formula film for Beavis and Butthead. The bad guys win in killing the hero, for goodness sakes. If that doesn't make the haters happy, they're just out of control. The ghost's tutor also is the victim of negativity and bad guys. But two victories for the bad guys isn't enough for Hollywood, so that made this a very risky undertaking.
It's the theater of the story that ultimately makes it 10/10. In order to be a super classic 10/10 film, it has to be something that could work just as well on stage, something that can inspire kids to a land of make believe. This film does that.

You chose a great movie to watch for the first time of the year - "Ghost" is a beautiful film on many levels. (:I was impressed by the movie as a child, although kids are most impressed by everything when growing up; even stupid movies. I remember being crazy for the movie "Ernest Scared Stupid." For what, I have no idea; but that's a story for another day. (; "Ghost" to me is a very smart movie. It's a very dramatic and heartfelt movie with elements of horror, action and plenty of suspenseful moments. The whole time you watch the movie you're on Sam Wheat's side (Patrick Swayze). Even in death you want to see him find his killer, kick a can, and make contact with his widow. Molly, (Demi Moore), the deuteragonist of the film, you find yourself caring for equally in life. This movie was bound to have a tragic ending in the most tearful way. Yep, The tear meter is also high in this movie. When that Unchained Melody film score comes on by Maurice Jarre, it pulls all the heart strings in this film. For a director to come off of directing over-the-top comedies like "Airplane!" and "Top Secret!" this movie was certainly phenomenal in comparison. @lux I think said what could be one of my only complaints about the film. Although Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg) was the perfect actress for all of the comedy relief in this film, I do believe her character could have been written to be a bit more serious. It would've changed much of the film, of course. However, she did bring out the best and worst of Sam in the afterlife, which was all types of fun. I just wish she had more serious moments than comedic moments. A very small complaint either way. (; This movie shows you how versatile both Swayze and Moore were during their prime movie days. Swayze was coming off from doing "Dirty Dancing" and would be making "Point Break" following this film. Moore was on her way to star in the movies "Mortal Thoughts" and "A Few Good Men" after. All excellent movies for the two actors. (;Overall a great movie, definitely one of the first best movies of the decade. Unless you want to watch movies like "Ghost Dad" or "Casper," there was no other ghost movie that came close to this movie at the time (movies today don't even come close to it). Gifs included, fellow follower. (;
