Covenant is great. But nowadays, unless a movie is from Marvel or directed by Christopher Nolan, people will hate on it. Of course...you are right....no hyperbole here...

But high with critics ? The movie has a certificated fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 73% and 66 on metacritic which is for metacritic standards good. But the movie is right on 6.9 on IMDB and is still falling. Didn't watch the movie yet, but it's very strange. These kind of movies have a very high rating from the people, especially in the beginning. But when these movies have a higher score from critics too, the rating is even higher from the fans. Even Prometheus after so many years has a bigger score than this movie, it has a 7 on IMDB. Why don't people like this movie ? Honestly, I think it's mostly people who like to Prometheus voicing their displeasure with less of the Engineers. I don't know if you remember, but Prometheus was a really divisive movie too. If you look at rotten tomatoes, the two movies have almost identical scores from both fans and critics.I thought that it was better Prometheus in almost every way. It was more entertaining, the scientists were nowhere near as stupid, and there was more tension. The lack of attention was my biggest complaint about Prometheus. I could have ignored the bad acting and dumb characters if the movie was simply more entertaining/compelling.

The movie is nothing but a hollow remake of the first Alien. Complete lack of tension, build up, suspense. Just gore for the sake of it. The characters are one note and forgettable, and p lus we get more of that groansome religious subtext from Prometheus, but handled even less interestingly. Thats just my opinion, but I guess it's shared by a lot of others. Does that answer your question??? That's really not true at all. The movie is nothing like Alien storyline-wise. The only thing the two movies have in connection are that both crews receive a mysterious distress call. I do think that they should have been a little more creative in how they explained the crew with a Covenant landing on David's planet. That definitely lacked creativity. But a healthy chunk, if not most, of this movie revolves around David. There is nothing like that in the original movie. And even in your criticism of the religious subtext you inadvertently knowledge something that was never in this series until Prometheus. Religion exists. Many people believe in it even if you don't. if the mere mention of it bothers you, you might work on your tolerance.

I'm guessing it's been awhile since you've seen Alien. David is pretty much Ash, except way less realistic and way more over the top. And no, I don't need to work on my tolerance. The fact that the subject is religious has nothing to do with why I don't like it. It's because it's handled in a jarring, obvious and obnoxious way.

It's sold as "an Alien movie", but it's a Prometheus sequel with some bits of Alien shoved in to please the fans. They should have done one of two things, in my opinion. 1) Call it "Prometheus 2 : Covenant". Make it the sequel to Prometheus, which would be about David and Shaw doing their thing and David turning evil. I wouldn't want to see that movie myself. or 2) Call it "Alien : Covenant" and make it an actual Alien movie about the Xenomorphs. Don't even mention David and Shaw whatsoever. No black goo, no stupid floaty gunk, no silly "not the Xenomorph" monsters. What they did was took option 1 and tried to hide it inside of something that looked like option 2. That's why I didn't like it. YMMV.

I am very familiar with Alien, it sounds like you are not; since your description of this movie is so off. It's a lazy copout of a response.

Maybe we are thinking of different movies, here's a link to the imdb page of the one I'm talking about. www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/?ref_=nv_sr_2
