Here's the thing i've only played gta iii vice city and san andreas. But i wouldn't like any newer games in this series because i think newer console games are too weird.
But gta III, is still the best for me, and a remake wouldn't be better. Because it doesn't give you a map or a map to show you where you are.
So basically you just have to learn the city, and how you have to get to wherever just by learning it. So in that way it's more realistic because if you drive anywhere you have to know where you're going in real life.
It's the one thing that the future games don't have... I mean by not having it. It's the lack of this feature that gives the game the added difficulty that seems like real life.

I own and have played 3. I haven't played Vice City or San Andreas, but I do own those too. I bought them last year.

And the swear words in later ones, are too innapropriate. But the 1st 3 games had a proper usage of swearing.

And they didn't exist in 1985 either when vice city was taken place.
And B. It wouldn't help you if you had a map if you are driving at the same time. Not at the speeds that you have to drive in this game. If you had to glance at the map while driving that wouldn't work and also it wouldn't show you where you were anyway.
Also even if you had gps, most of the time it wouldn't work in this game. since you are always driving at high speeds the gps wouldn't have to time to keep up.

For nostalgia, it's Vice City.
If I try to be objective, it's probably Grand Theft Auto IV.

I gave up on the series at GTA IV. The slow pace and realistic driving controls just killed the fun factor for me.
Vice City is probably my favourite but San Andreas is probably the better game.

I never played San Andreas which is usually considered the series high point but I say GTA V.

If you haven't played them all, it's kind of difficult to say which is the best, lol.
Admittedly, I haven't played GTA V yet either, although that game is actually 8 years old now.
