Having seen it myself, and having doubted beforehand that it might be any better than Prometheus, I can happily say that Covenant was great!. I enjoyed this movie so much. I'd say its the third best Alien movie.
1) Alien
2) Aliens
3) Alien Covenant
IMO
Yes, crew members continue to make dumb mistakes that get them into deep doo-doo, but that's different than making mistakes that make no sense whatsoever (Which Prometheus was full of). Its not a perfect movie by far, but the action was off the hook, the cast was very well acted, Fassbender is fricking amazing, this movie actually had a story, and we do get answers to many questions and a furthering of the Alien mythology overall. In short this movie was MUUUUCH better than Prometheus.
I read a review somewhere that said "it wasn't Lindelof after all"; suggesting that it was Ridley Scott himself who was ruing this franchise. Nope. It was Lindelof! Covenant made SO MUCH more sense than Prometheus. Covenant actually has a story. A thin one sure, but at least it has one.
SOME MINOR SPOILERS:
In short the crew of Covenant are forced to cut their trip short and have to land on the planet Shaw and David (from Prometheus) landed on. At first they think its great there, but very soon they realize that basically the whole planet is out to kill them. David saves them but he has his own ulterior motives which leads to more deaths.
But throughout that slim story we as an audience are treated to visual spectacles unlike any we've seen in any previous Alien movie, including amazing set designs, great FX, blood curdling scenes, and action galore; New AND familiar creatures to kill crew members; and all the while a continuing quest by David and the new character Walter, to find meaning in the universe - Walter by looking inward and David by using the Alien virus to become a kind of creator of his own.
Michael Fassbender is a revelation in a dual role of David and Walter. Both robots look the same, and both behave uniquely unusual, but one never gets the two confused - either in their look or personality. Just a gesture by the actor lets you know which character you're looking at at any given moment. It is a remarkable achievement by the actor, and director, to keep the two characters strangely eerie yet relatable and despicable respectively both at the same time. Billy Crudup delivers a good performance as well as a man of faith in counterpoint to the some of the crew and to the David character. Katherine Waterston is good too though her character has less depth. She is involved in one of the better action sequences.
But best of all Covenant really expands on both Prometheus as a sequel, and on the Alien franchise overall. I'm very excited to see Scott do another one of these if they're going to be like this one.
