I still want to see a modern Bond movie set in the ’50s/’60s. Like that Guy Ritchie Man from U.N.C.L.E., but with a better and clearer plot. While they’re at it, they might as well adapt whatever elements from the Ian Fleming books they haven’t already. I’d love to see Bond going after Blackbeard’s treasure the way he does in the book Live and Let Die, traveling on a transatlantic liner like he does in Diamonds Are Forever, etc.

Spoilers.

So make them like the Roger Moore movies? I think some of the Brosnan sequels like The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day became a $100M version of that.

We live in a fragile society. There's not much left that can be done with James Bond.

There will never be a theatrical James Bond film that is set in any time period other than the present day. Bond has been -- and will always be -- a "contemporary" character.
But the main reason is this: You can't put any meaningful product placement in a period film.
Product placement in Bond films can offset up to $50 million of the production budget.
What modern products can you "place" in a movie set in 1955? No smart phones, no laptops, no sleek new automobiles...

An important part of the Ian Fleming books is his being a WWII veteran who is dealing (as was his author) with postwar Britain’s declining influence during the Cold War. That’s an interesting element and one that the BBC radio adaptations have done but the movies haven’t.
