Of these Special Edition releases, the only one I saw in cinemas was The Empire Strikes Back. Was also my first time seeing any Star Wars movie on the big screen.

I loved the Special Editions when they came out. They reinvigorated the franchise for me. It was difficult getting the trilogy on VHS round about that time. The Death Star assault was amazing and still is one of my favourite cinematic sequences.
The posters looked fantastic, I don't know why the subsequent dvd covers look so shit.

My mom even took my brother and I out of school to go see it.

The Special Editions of SW & ESB are upgrades for me.
ROTJ stupid song & dance at Jabba's is worse than anything in the prequels.
I remember driving to a local theatre on a whim this night, only to see f'n lineups & sold out signs. I knew then that Star Wars was back. I went the Sunday morning 10am showing, less than 20ppl in the place... technical difficulties, we were offered free swag in return for correct trivia questions by the staff... Once that screening was over we were all walking out with swag seeing more sold out lineups looking at us like WTF, private screening AND swag?? lols

Thankfully this was removed from future releases.

It was ridiculous to have Luke scream at all when he fell willingly.

“R2-D2 and C-3PO steal the show.” Leonard Maltin would love the eighties series Droids then.

I don't remember if I went to see them. I don't believe so, I think I had them all on tape.

I remember the VHS tapes being in gold and silver for the fullscreen and widescreen editions. Suncoast used to have people make reservations just to get a copy.

I was 12 when it was released ans it remains the earliest version of the original Star Wars that I've ever watched, having never bothered to check out the 1977 version. I am a fan.

I thought it was so cool the special editions when they came out. It was the heyday of CGI. CGI blockbusters were still relatively new and I thought it was great seeing Star Wars modernised. All I had was a taped vhs of the original and I hadn't seen them since I was kid. Since the spec editions, they were on tv more often and it led to the prequels. Once the Phantom Menace came out, it gave me a CGI overdose, it looked like a computer game,

Look at those shitty photoshop dvd covers. One of the worst cinematic sins Lucas committed (he turned to the dark side by this point) was the tie fighter vs millennium falcon dog fight after they escape the Death Star. What a great idea to have the screen flashing a little bit white to make it look worse so you have to buy the next one. What an arsehole. He got it right in the 1997 one, how come he couldn't get that right when he added in Jabba the hut talking to Han solo. And, the noise Obi Wan makes is so silly with each one that goes by.

These were my introduction to SW as a kid. Remember watching the Jabba scene in ANH thinking "did they have CGI back then?" Don't think I learned they'd been modified until Hayden Christensen showed up.
I found the original versions on VHS at Goodwill and have stuck to those ever since.

I actually love how grainy these transfers are & how twangy they sound... just like a theatre from the late 70's/early 80's would.
