Sarah Polley writing and directing Miriam Toews adaptation - a story of a spate of sexual violence in a Mennonite community. Demons abound. Frances McDormand, Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley and Ben Whishaw star. Sounds yummy.
Any comments/dish/thoughts/expectations/early buzz??

Like Politicidal, this is the first time I hear about it.
But, what is the selling point? I'll admit that I don't really know all the top people of the cast but I do see some popular names but beyond that?
The movie is about what? The abuses that happened under a religious groups?
I'm catholic, a lapsed catholic actually but still, I know (not even counting all the historic stuff) just from my parents and grand-parents the abuses that were committed in the name of the Church. Having to balance between your own ideas and what is asked of you, in terms of faith and towards your own church is something that I'm aware of.
So, no, it didn't came up on my radar.

the cast intrigues me as does the director but the title… Oh Man… do I sound too misogynistic if I say its one of the most repelling tittle for a movie out there? 😂 Who wants to hear “women talking”?? Is this for the audiance of The View? ? Thats what it sounds like. Because of the title I was under the impression its going to be some MeToo or feminist themed flick, but the description saying “demons abound” saved the day… or at least makes me hopefull… I was gonna say “anything that frances mcdormand in must be good” but them I remembered Nomad. Nope. Such big Nope. So… I mean Ill give them my money and will go see it and I root for Sarah Paulson always I just hope its not a feminazi or bored housewive thing . checked out imdb: “A group of women in an isolated Mennonite religious colony in Bolivia as they struggle to reconcile their faith with a string of sexual assaults committed by the colony's men.” hmm… I dont think its going to be actual demons but men so it Is a Metoo/Feminist thing. I see its based on a book…. well lets see. i hope they wont push it too far.

The movie sounds original... (I'm so over superheros, lady assassins, serial killers and movies derived from video games and comics).....and rather dark (my tastes) .....and it has a cracking cast - McDormand alone a draw for me. Mara.Foy & Buckley are all currently "hot", and Whishaw usually good.

Because a Serbian Film was also original, yet, despite the fact I made it through, it's not something that I enjoyed or would recommend to anyone.
Also, it's not because it's "different" that I'm not sold on it. While in sheer number I'm definitely not the person who watches the most movies in a year on average on these boards, I do try and enjoy a bit of everything, from mainstream AAA productions, to B series to straight-to-DVD stuff, across all genres. So it's not because I'm limiting my field of view.
From her post, Nora pretty much described my doubts or worries about the movie.
If you summarize it, you got the plot :
Combined with the title, Women Talking (which is really a bait for sexist jokes) and the fact that some of the main actresses, from what I gather, are activists, you end up with something that does seem like an activist movie where women are talking about MeToo using an historical background.
My fear is that, even if it's based on a novel, the message will come heavy-handed.
While I'm not against activism in movies or ones that are more "politically engaged", I can't say that's usually my cup of tea, no matter the cause.

I really want to see this. why, if I may ask? I couldnt take it. Walked out after about an hour. Well crafted and acted film but not for me. Its another “torture and disgust porn” flick, with nothing of substance to add. lately that seems to be the trend. Not why I watch movies.

Got a Golden Globe nom for screenplay - anybody actually seen it? yes. well 60 minutes of it. its awful but trendy topic so yeah it makes sende it generates noms. it has a great craft behind that that much is true. beautiful visuals and acting, clear artistic vision. just the topic and script is vile, and not in an educational way. brings nothing new to the viewer from my point of view.

It looks like it would be a really well acted and interesting film. it is well acted you are correct. but it brings NOTHING other than that. No intriguing thought, no novel way of portraying such tragic things, no emotion elicited without showing horrific torture scenes and blood. Torturing women is bad. Ok. We knew that. What else was the movie trying to say and why?? I am genuinely interested in discussing this movie with someone who has seen and liked it. Would love to hear what they found good about it.

I had the notion to tag you in an awards thread to ask you about this, because I know you are reliable with keeping up to date with the latest releases. I have watched the trailer and visually it looks very strong. I agree with what you commented earlier up on the thread regarding the title. It appears to give the film less appeal value. The film is only rated PG13 though, so why do you claim what I have bolded? weird that its PG13. There is miscarriage blood being smeered over walls and people, 4 year old girl talking about being raped and now hurting from it, it doesnt show the rape but it is clear as day thats what happened, constant references of brutal rape, showing very brusised and beat up women, with their teeth knocked out etc.. They mostly Talk about the torture (violent rapes including children) and dont show it so maybe thats how it got the rating? But even the shots of blood in their thighs, beds, hands and walls were too much for me when shown repeatadly, plus the anguish they all were in. Its mostly mental torture for the viewer.

If you had stayed to the end, it was only another 45mins, it may have rounded things out. I doubt I will bother.
What do you suppose the point of the film is? That Mennonite men are assholes? If it wants to make a statement about the patriarchy and how evil men are, using a very small marginal religious sect to make this point seems absurd. Unless it is making a statement about how religion has been mismanaged for power and control over women, yet that affects both genders too.
I think its making all of those statements. - menoninte men bad - men bad - religious opression bad the trouble was that it made this point so easily so early on (brutally raped women waking up bruised in the first scene) that the rest seemed so redundant. Ok we know men = bad, and women = suffer but what else? It looked visually so appealing that I was really excited to see it at first. And the acting was good. But it was just too gruesome and “empty” for me to stay and endure what otherwise was a well made film. I also think the reason why it felt empty was that they showed the women as empty shells of themselves, which one one hand make sense, because of the opression, on another it then didnt really prompt the viewer to care about them. Also they made them illiterate but oddly eloquant/wise/ KNOWLEDGEABLE at the same time which again made no sense.
