We debate all the time what's missing from movies, what should there be more of, what we'd like to see more of, but we don't seem to have the same conversations about books, and if you're like me, there's no real shortage of stuff to read, BUT, if you're also like me, a lot of it is actually not new, new fiction is a rarity. It's so rare to actually find a new one in the library that even seems worth checking out, forget paying $20 new in the store.
What do you think there's too much of in novels? What does there need to be more of?
Too much of: every protagonist is a cop, lawyer, doctor, private eye, criminologist, something in those specific fields, 'trying to put their life back together' after their spouse or their child or spouse AND child tragically die/are murdered, and their past comes back to haunt them.
How about one where a working stiff with a typical 9 to 5 job just happens to get caught in a cat/mouse game and it doesn't have to do with a loved one dying 10 years earlier?
How about one where the protagonist doesn't have a job? Could be blissfully unemployed, or painfully unemployed, how about a lottery winner maintaining a blue collar lifestyle?
