Two weeks worth REWATCHES![](https://fffmovieposters.com/wp-content/uploads/73801.jpg) Suspect I'm probably on my 10th viewing of this dazzling musical - a smash hit in 2002 and with MOULIN ROUGE it probably resurrected an interest in the genre after a 30 year fallow period. Terrific performances down the line with an oscar winning Zeta-Jones. Some glorious songs ("Cell Block Tango" my favourite) and wonderful lyrics (Ebb rhymes Methuselah with Bamboozler in one) and those Fosse moves recorded for posterity. My only quibble is the frenzied editing - necessary for the segues between "reality" and "fantasy" versions of what the characters experience - but the cynic in me wondered whether the dance numbers were put together in the editing room. Compare them to Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling or Vera-Ellen back flipping down the stairs in WHITE CHRISTMAS - or Fosse himself with Carol Haney in KISS ME KATE - long shots of the number with few cuts - dancers who really performed the whole number in front of you. ![](https://img.posterlounge.co.uk/img/products/350000/347686/347686_poster_l.jpg) Sixth viewing - Unseen in full for some 45 years - I was taken to see it at the cinema 5 times before my teens - ever since then just hearing the first 7 bars of the chorus of Do Re Mi would send me to a dark and melancholy place. The recent discussion thread prompted me to man up and give it another go - happy to report I was ensorcelled. It really is an amazing achievement - Terrific R&H score - almost every number a winner - Julie Andrews in her defining role, drop dead gorgeous scenery and imaginative staging of the songs. Great editing too - Do Re Mi and the whole picnic sequence esp fine. Cute choreography - esp involving the kids. I thought Plummer brought a much needed sharpness to counteract the saccharine potential . I'm always puzzled that the Baroness (Eleanor Parker) gets referred to as the villainess - she isn't at all - just a worldly patrician beauty - if a little fuzzy in the close ups - who knows when she's licked and who retires gracefully. I did think the first half much stronger - The Nazis and reprises and Baroness deficit being the main factors in my diminished Act 2 enjoyment. With my WEST SIDE STORY rewatch a month or so I'm now keen to check out everything on Robert Wise's CV I have missed. So park your prejudices musical and/or Julie naysayers - give it a whirl - your classic cinema education is incomplete until you have viewed it. ![](https://charlestonpr.com/cprad15/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/I-have-confidence-Julie-Andrews.png) ![](http://www.impawards.com/1945/posters/man_in_half_moon_street_xlg.jpg) Second view - Unmemorable mystery with attractive cast. ![](https://s.yimg.com/aah/yhst-28239674641265/kill-dvd-1971-jean-seberg-james-mason-stephen-boyd-33.gif) Probably my 6th or 7th viewing. Abysmal drug trade thriller which I watch every so often because I like to be reminded of how bad a film can be. Seberg's Sank No Deeper - the second directed by Romain Gary, her husband - the marriage unravelling at the time - Gary's jibes at his wife's real life "Actorvist" activities shine through - read Gary's memoir WHITE DOG for more detail - the true story of his involvement "reforming" a dog trained to attack Black people against the backdrop of late 60s Civil Rights happy Hollywood - a profoundly cynical view of the era and Jean's involvement with Black Power and "Civil Rights" charlatans. FIRST VIEWINGS
RECOMMENDED ![](https://i0.wp.com/teaser-trailer.com/wp-content/uploads/The-CHildren-Act-new-film-poster.jpg?resize=400%2C600&ssl=1) Emma Thompson can be a fearfully irritating "luvvie" - and can ham it up badly on occasion - but no denying she is a very talented woman and in the right role can take your breath away. THE CHILDREN ACT is one of her best recent films I have seen (LATE NIGHT even better) - she's a judge involved in a difficult judgement when a Jehovah's witness minor refuses blood transfusions that will save his life. An unfaithful hubbie presents problems on the domestic front. ![](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/original/imh9uDFtwhXIfEgUCvLHOJeLkt0.jpg) Absorbing study of disabled alcoholic who finds salvation in becoming a cartoonist- based on true story - Funnier than you'd imagine - Nice supporting turns from Jonah Hill as the AA "sponsor", singer Beth Ditto and cult actor Udo Kier as support group members, Jack Black as bad choice random drinking buddy. Rooney Mara again made no impression - what can't I see? WATCHABLE/OF INTEREST/IF YOU HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO
Three women who meet at compulsory anger management classes team up to remove unwanted men from the lives of local women. Some very funny lines, the wonderful Jennifer Coolidge in a lead role at full throttle, and it clocks in under 90 mins. ![](https://teaser-trailer.com/wp-content/uploads/Please-Stand-By-new-poster.jpg) Dakota Fanning impressive as autistic Star Trek fan who dreams big.... ![](http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-w1jh-WoVtI8/UL6GlxFjfLI/AAAAAAAAJwg/QCROmmHoTlI/s640/Another.jpg) Comedy dramas about weddings amongst dysfunctional families are a dime a dozen but this one has a good cast. Producer Ellen Barkin gets the fattest part , but Ezra Miller as druggie, challenging son, Diana Scarwid as acid tongued sister and Demi Moore as ex hubbie's second wife/bitchy step mom stand out. ![](https://doctormacro.com/Images/Posters/C/Poster%20-%20Chinatown%20Nights%20(1929)_01.jpg) Wallace Beery as unlikely leader of Chinese Gang smitten by Florence Vidor. Atmospheric if implausible melodrama. ![](https://movieplayer.net-cdn.it/t/images/2016/07/19/locanidna_jpg_120x0_crop_q85.jpg) Jake Gyllenhaal as grieving widower struggling to put his life back together. ![](https://www.doctormacro.com/Images/Posters/L/Poster%20-%20Love%20(1927)_02.jpg) Plush silent version of ANNA KARENINA - best version I have seen (faint praise) ![](https://alchetron.com/cdn/Adventure-in-Manhattan-images-8f311880-1394-4776-844c-0aec457ac56.jpg) Formulaic but cute lightweight romance with a touch of crime. Arthur & McCrea work well together. ![](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91rN8ASkcgL._SX450_.jpg) A family gathers together when the patriarch becomes ill. Not very original but good cast (including Genevieve Bujold) makes it seem better than it is. ![](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/original/cMch3tiexw3FdOEeZxMWVel61Xg.jpg) Horror thriller has slow build up to a reveal of a really hideously unpleasant "monster"... Amy Madigan's death scene especially gruesome. ![](https://alchetron.com/cdn/Oklahoma-1999-film-images-f265f805-742e-4eff-90eb-3595cfceb7b.jpg) I was still in a Rodgers & Hammerstein mood and this lengthy recording of the Trevor Nunn stage triumph sufficed. ![](https://cfm.yidio.com/images/movie/122905/poster-180x270.jpg) Passable 50 minute biog - I marked it down because a) it only mentions three of her post BAREFOOT CONTESSA movies - IGUANA natch and THE SENTINEL and CASSANDRA CROSSING as examples of the programmers she appeared in later in her career - blithely ignoring BHOWANI JUNCTION and ON THE BEACH, both of which are generally regarded as career high points and b) it mistakenly states she got her oscar nom for THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO, when it was for MOGAMBO. That is just sloppy. FIND SOMETHING BETTER TO DO than watch any of the rest, which range from mediocre to atrocious.![](https://media.flickeringmyth.com/q:i/r:0/wp:1/w:600/u:https://cdn.flickeringmyth.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/unnamed-600x869.jpg) ![](https://www.themoviescene.co.uk/reviews/_img/5625-1.jpg) ![](http://www.favouritefilm.com/acatalog/storyofawomanquad.JPG) ![](https://pics.filmaffinity.com/storia_di_una_donna-219996065-large.jpg) Shatner Fans note he plays twins, and one spends half the film with his shirt off. ![](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/original/kMvWml9oNaiklGXHBjQioWh6Vr3.jpg) ![](https://vhscollector.com/sites/default/files/vhsimages/28094_violentones-spotlite1%2520%2528VHSCollector.com%2529%2520.jpg) ![](https://gfx.videobuster.de/archive/v/cE4Bx5KIcFydhYjQzKGBb4Qcz0lMkawryUyRjAxJTJGaW1hmSUyRmpwZWclMkY5ZGTt1WZkzeVj7zlilWYwNGNl8N30Zi5qcGcmcj1ovzA/oscar-und-lucinda.jpg) ![](https://www.soundtrackcollector.com/img/movie/large/NellAnno_Signore_(1969).jpg) ![](https://media.flickeringmyth.com/q:i/r:0/wp:1/w:800/u:https://cdn.flickeringmyth.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/House-of-Tomorrow-poster.jpg) STINKERS OF THE FORTNIGHTThe completely incomprehensible ![](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w600_and_h900_bestv2/pGPUXyhQTOqskKdDOD3Fmicqfc0.jpg) and the wretched ![](https://s.yimg.com/aah/yhst-28239674641265/kill-dvd-1971-jean-seberg-james-mason-stephen-boyd-33.gif) At one point this was in my all time bottom 10 - with heavy hitters like TENET and the new BEN HUR hoving into view that may not now be the case - but it is diabolically bad.[/spoiler]

I seldom care about sport on TV, Olympics though, when we win medals it's we, when we loose it's them, the travel for free tourists. Sweden - Canada Lady Hockey 0 - 11, we are too far away. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) . Over to the movies: Bruce Almighty 2003 directed by Tom Shadyac. Complaints and complaints, and the Almighty says OK, now you take care of business! and it's not as easy as it sounds. Hadn't seen this one in years, and it's one of the few Jim Carey comedies I can stand, and it's bubbly amusing nearly all the time, and dares to take a few serious turns. A black actor playing the Almighty that's dazzling in it self too! Victor/Victoria 1982 directed by Blake Edwards and based on an old German movie by Reinhold Schünzel. Gay Paris of old days isn't just merry, Gay Paris men't Gay! When a singer poses as a man poses as a female impersonator and becomes the rage of Paris, attracting even nearly gangsters from Chicago, who feels uncomfortable being attracted to a man or woman. Unashamedly art-deco studio bound delight gives an old fashioned feeling that actually works, thanks to music and actors. It's gay gay gay! As a straight man I had no trouble whatsoever enjoying this gem!
Continental Divide 1981 directed by Michael Apted. Tough Chicago reporter get too tough and and is forced by his publisher to hide away in the mountains, writing a human interest story, instead of usual columns exploring political corruption. In the mountains were the Bald Headed Eagles lives he is out of his usual element, and out of breath too, and the one saving those eagles is a woman, it's hate at first glance. James Belushi in one of his rare roles as a reasonable normal guy, is actually charming in a wry kind of way, slowly falling for the Eagle woman. Made in beautiful locations in many USA mountainous States when the Bald Headed Eagle was endangered, something it's apparently not anymore. As a movie, it has an old-fashioned charm that I liked, that sometimes opposites can attract. Pociag aka Night Train 1959 directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz. I should be enthusiastic since it takes place on a train, and maybe I was fooled by some reviewers that called this Hitchcock like thriller and a masterpiece of Polish Cinema. It's non of that, yes there is a murder mystery, and yes some passengers behaves mysteriously and Yes it do have some great cinematography but otherwise it was like a normal train ride, long a boring with boom-chicka-boom sound. Iron Curtain James Dean Zbigniew Cybulski at least shows some spark as a lovelorn who didn't understand it was just a fling and not forever romance, next year he starred in Ashes and Diamonds 1960. This movie went above my head though. Time without Pity 1957 directed by Joseph Losey and based on a play by Emlyn Williams. An alcoholic's son is going to be hanged for murdering a young woman, is there an error in the judgement? Having a hangover and yearning for a drink, the father sees a few flaws and finds them, but must puzzle them together before his son is hanged.and he is great as a degenarated man Lesser known Redgrave movie, and he is great as a degenerated person, trying one last thing and doing it right, before disappearing into obscurity... This was Peter Cushing's last movie (playing a lawyer) before acting in a monster movie... as if that would be a career LOL! Nicholas Nickleby 1947 directed by Cavalcanti and based on a novel by Charles Dickens. Since I wrote about Cavalcanti I thought I better watch some of his movies, and this was it. It's true it doesn't measure up to David Lean's Great Expectations 1946 and Oliver Twist 1948 or even MGM¨s David Copperfield 1935, but those are masterpieces, and this is not up there, but still a damn good movie in itself. Derek Bond as Nicholas lacks the charisma to carry the movie, he's not bad but lacks the important "it" and feels bland. Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Sir Bernard Miles and Stanley Holloway all play the more interesting characters. Not bad, but lacks the spark of the other three great Dickens' movies mentioned. Well that was all from me!

My movie-watching week started with Ant-Man and ended with Batman. Ant-Man (2015). Don't tread on an ant; he's done nothing to you. There might come a day when he's treading on you! From the opening scene, which we get before the 'Marvel Studios' logo appears, you know things will be a bit different with this movie compared to the previous ones. It was a nice surprise to see Hayley Atwell (once again rocking the convincing old age makeup) as an older Peggy Carter, who appears alongside a more youthful-looking Michael Douglas as Hank Pym (which remains the BEST de-aging I’ve seen in a film) and John Slattery's Howard Stark. After this set-up, we're introduced to Paul Rudd's Scott Lang in a scene you think you've watched many times before (the hero getting beaten up in jail, only to fight back and win), but it’s something else. I appreciated this shake-up to the formula we've become accustomed to over time. And that's this film's main takeaway: it mixes things up, which is sometimes a positive/sometimes a negative. The beginning, for example, feels slower-paced with its setting up of the characters and rather ‘low-key’ in comparison to other Marvel films. Paul Rudd has an easy likeability about him, which is important since Scott’s a burglar...but he’s also a mostly-good person. Seeing our hero working at Baskin-Robbins may come as a surprise to some, but he’s just an ordinary guy trying to do right by his daughter (the heart of the film). Unlike certain other jerky superheroes, while Scott gets some funny lines (Rudd's extra-dry delivery helps), thankfully it’s not of the rapid-fire mumbling snark variety and he also knows what he’s good at, without being full of himself. Playing well off Rudd is Evangeline Lilly, sporting toned arms and a questionable bob haircut as Hank's daughter, Hope van Dyne. While she starts off seeming like the typical ‘tough chick’ who argues with her father, teaches Scott to fight and doesn’t seem to like either of them very much, we learn why that is (Hank fed her a lie about the death of her mother and also refuses to let her wear the Ant-Man suit despite her proving time and again how qualified she is to be a hero while Scott struggles to be). So, she has good reasons for acting the way she does and is far from ‘one-note’. Eventually Scott earns her respect; her dad tells her the truth and that’s when they become a team. Lilly displays her range, showing she's not only capable of throwing a punch and delivering verbal barbs, but also displaying humanity when it counts whilst never losing her edge. Her final line in the mid-credits scene, “About damn time.”, is not only in regards to Hank finally allowing her to don a superhero suit (that of The Wasp, as her mother was before her) and join Scott, but also about it being well-past time we had a female superhero working alongside the male lead as an equal partner. I really liked her dynamics with Scott and Hank. Speaking of, Douglas lends some real weight/gravitas to the film, playing the old Ant-Man who needs someone to take over from him. He gives a layered performance and the way Hank tests Scott makes for the film's first memorable 'shrinking' sequence. Regarding the shrinking effects on display, these aren't the old-style Honey, I Shrunk the Kids type of thing, but much more refined. The concept of Ant-Man allows for something completely different to what we're used to when it comes to MCU action sequences. Scott's first shrinking was quite effective, conveying just how dangerous everyday normal things can be when you're the size of an ant. The upside is that he gains strength and ants become his allies. He even develops a friendship with one particular winged Carpenter ant he names Ant-thony (if you didn't see the outcome of this friendship coming from a mile away...clearly you’ve never seen Honey, I Shrunk the Kids). We soon learn of various types of ants, all of which have different sets of skills that come in handy, and it's nice to see Scott's bonding with his various insectoid allies. At the other end of the spectrum is nasty badguy, Darren Cross, whose experiments reduce test subjects to bloody piles of goo (WHY’D they have to do that to the CUTEST LAMB EVER?! At least Hope was upset by it). It's weird that he’s so focused on this shrinking tech when he has a gun that TURNS PEOPLE TO GOO (which can be flushed down the toilet) that's a more powerful weapon. His is the latest in a long line of MCU bad guys, and as unhinged but otherwise relatively 'normal' human villains go, Corey Stoll does a decent enough job (though he missed an opportunity to use " Dead-ant, dead-ant/Dead-ant, dead-ant dead-ant dead-ant dead-ant..." when threatening Ant-Man). Scott also battles a less-likeable-than-he-was-in-CA: TWS Sam Wilson/Falcon at one point. Scott's heist buddies, referred to as "wombats" by Hank, are mostly played for laughs (with varying degrees of success), but are alright/not entirely useless. Michael Peña’s Luis walks a fine line between being entertaining and annoying, especially with his storytelling about tips he's given. Judy Greer has the rather thankless role of Scott's ex-wife, Maggie, while her new husband, Paxton (Bobby Cannavale), seems kind of a jerk for most of the movie, but eventually shows he's a decent guy. There are some really great moments (unfortunately, the trailers spoiled the Thomas the Tank Engine scene) throughout, plenty of heart, a likeable hero and new/fresh type of superhero power that we haven’t seen before which isn’t just about causing explosions. There’s real imagination/creativity to it. Best of all is the catchy/memorable ‘Ant-Man Theme’ (it’s nice to have a clearly identifiable superhero theme after so long). While I was a bit underwhelmed by this film after my first viewing, and really wanted to know what Edgar Wright (who dropped out due to 'creative differences') would’ve done with the concept, I’ve appreciated this movie more with repeated viewings. It mightn't be one of the 'big' MCU films...but you know what they say about good things coming in small packages. ![](https://78.media.tumblr.com/848efbd2d65ee4e2bf10ede2966c3167/tumblr_p7puagNJKL1qetpu1o1_400.gif) ![](https://64.media.tumblr.com/763772e6ac4a1e1b1a7e723f78beeced/tumblr_oyyau2589e1uujbcio5_250.gifv) ![](https://c.tenor.com/ykQ6QAjYj1IAAAAC/hes-so-ugly-marvel.gif) ![](https://thumbs.gfycat.com/RemoteSmartArgali-max-1mb.gif) ![](https://thumbs.gfycat.com/FirsthandLightJabiru-max-1mb.gif) ![](https://thumbs.gfycat.com/BlackDecisiveCapeghostfrog-size_restricted.gif) ![](https://i0.wp.com/www.helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Ant-Man-Suit.gif) ![](https://c.tenor.com/lYLPUKMO0ZoAAAAC/shrink-paul-rudd.gif) ![](https://i.gifer.com/OZT8.gif) ![](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DbLtkZvWAAAGOST.jpg) ![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/48a889_20587d698c1445de93de8909da76b06d~mv2.gif) ![](http://images6.fanpop.com/image/photos/42900000/Hope-and-Scott-Ant-Man-2015-ant-man-42983389-540-291.gif) ![](https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-3a57dd3f532424a7d3684e95ac92d8db) ![](https://i.imgur.com/BxAskwR.jpg) ![](https://i.gifer.com/PE9X.gif) ![](https://c.tenor.com/AauVwB1Gea8AAAAM/youre-so-cute-paul-rudd.gif) ![](https://i.gifer.com/CMMC.gif) ![](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c64177f0852e7b70f891cd57bdb64901/tumblr_nxe6o4APgg1s2791bo7_250.gifv) ![](https://i.makeagif.com/media/8-22-2015/AIlRx4.gif) ![](https://thumbs.gfycat.com/ImprobableGenuineGuineafowl-max-1mb.gif) ![](https://i.makeagif.com/media/12-01-2015/H2HSkh.gif) ![](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DbL2Y4cXkAAJwB9.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/mRXWUnY.jpg) ![](https://potterwars.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/giphy4.gif) ![](https://i.gifer.com/2EY9.gif) ![](https://mtv.mtvnimages.com/uri/mgid:file:http:shared:mtv.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ant-man-2-1437058369.gif) ![](https://i2.wp.com/boingboing.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/mLeO9z.gif) ![](https://i.gifer.com/W78l.gif) ![](https://c.tenor.com/A6qZrJW51ZMAAAAd/thomas-the-tank-engine-antman.gif) ![](https://jenpereira3.files.wordpress.com/2019/04/giphy-4-10.gif) ![](https://thumbs.gfycat.com/SphericalSilverAntelopegroundsquirrel-size_restricted.gif) ![](https://i.imgur.com/ppWwquW.png) Gone in 60 Seconds (2000). EVEN MORE SILENT SHERLOCK The Devil’s Foot / Maurice Elvey (1921). Silent. 29 minutes. This early film is fairly true to its source, unusual for Holmes adaptations. It opens with Holmes (Eilee Norwood) and Watson walking by the sea. Watson reminds Holmes that he is taking a rest so must not work. Of course, they walk up to the first house they see and find three people, sitting upright around a table, dead. English stage and screen actor Eille Norwood played the great detective in 47 movies, all but two of them short films, made from 1921 to 1923. In Conan Doyle’s autobiography “Memories and Adventures” he says of Norwood: "His wonderful impersonation of Holmes has amazed me." Norwood died in 1948 at age 87. In 1927, Conan Doyle gave the world a list of his dozen personal Sherlock Holmes short story favorites. “The Devil’s Foot” was #9 on the list. ![](http://pics.filmaffinity.com/the_devil_s_foot_s-503251972-large.jpg) ![](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/QQR6WUaQgjk/hqdefault.jpg) ![](https://stopbutton.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/devils-foot.jpg?w=672) OTHER Went The Day Well? / Alberto Cavalcanti (1942). “Went the day well? / We died and never knew. / But, well or ill, / Freedom, we died for you.” (John Maxwell Edmonds). The fear of a German invasion of the British Isle was widespread in the early war years though the anxiety was beginning to diminish by1942 when this movie was released. The story of plucky ordinary English villagers resisting a Nazi advance force is bookended by a narrator from the future after Hitler “has got what’s coming to him.” The film then flashes back to ’42. I saw this first back in 2007 but the movie has since been cleaned up and given a Blu-ray release in 2011. Even though this was intended to be a morale booster, seen after 80 years, it is an edge of the seat thriller, but the courage and ingenuity of the villagers is inspiring but some of their deaths are still shocking and sad. It begins at the leisurely pace of small town life but after the Nazis are revealed, director Cavalcanti begins to tighten the screws. An unlikely hero manages to escape the Nazi cordon around the town to bring back help. I really do love this movie, another gem from the legendary Ealing Studio. ![](https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/original/4FeVtQpRS412b1WRJvKtFTuI2B.jpg) ![](https://filmfreedonia.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/wentthedaywell01.jpg) A Study In Terror / James Hill (1965). John Neville, renowned stage and sometime film actor, gives a good account of The World’s First Consulting Detective as Sherlock Holmes goes up against Jack the Ripper. Suspects abound. Is Jack the missing disowned son of a wealthy family? How about Doctor Murray (Anthony Quayle) who works with the poor in Whitehall and serves as the district coroner? Must Jack be a man? Could he be Dr. Murray’s assistant played by 31-year-old Judy Dench? I had my eye on the missing man’s ex-wife who betrayed him with the brutal saloon owner. Although nowhere near the explicit violence of some of today’s movies, the sudden knifings and throat slittings were shocking for the mid-‘60s. The cinematography clearly intends to duplicate the lavish colors and costuming of the Hammer historical Gothic horrors of the same era. Not entirely successful, but a nice try and entertaining movie. ![](http://s1.thcdn.com/productimg/0/960/960/36/10849836-1383935142-335877.jpg) ![](http://worldscinema.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/A-Study-in-Terror-19654-e1576304492341.png) ![]() ![](https://fourthgarrideb.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Judi-Dench-A-Study-in-Terror.jpg) MY FIRST REVIEW IN SEVERAL MONTHS OF A FILM FROM THE PAST FEW YEARS No Time To Die / Cary Joji Fukunaga (2021). Some of the first reviews out commented that the writers and producers put everything into Bond 25 including the kitchen sink. They were not wrong. References from all the way back to “Doctor No” can be found by the long-time Bond watcher. The movie stumbles in a couple of ways: First, it keeps its main villain (Rami Malek) off-screen until into the second half. Even then we don’t see him again until the big final set-piece. Second, it is just too damn long. The longest Bond of them all. There are a lot more pluses than minuses. There are some exciting chases: a pre-credits car chase and another over rugged roads into a forest. A couple of good jokes: at one point M (Ralph Fiennes) snaps, “Get me Double-0 7.” Which leads a little later to a Reveal that made me laugh out loud. For the second movie in a row, Bond is lured out of retirement, this time by his CIA buddy Felix Leiter (Jeffery Wright) to find a missing scientist who is carrying a possible new weapon that attacks DNA in a person’s body. He is hindered by fellow MI6 colleague Nomi (Lashana Lynch) but helped by new CIA agent Paloma (Ana de Armas) who has had three weeks training (but is more than ready to swing into action) and who wears what is now my favorite dress in a Bond movie ever. You don’t really have to have seen (and remember well) Daniel Craig’s previous four Bond movies, but it helps. “No Time” ties up a lot of plot arcs and brings a fitting end to Craig’s tenure. Returnees include Léa Seydoux as Madeleine Swann, Ben Whishaw as Q, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny, and Christoph Waltz as Blofeld. ![](https://www.filmstories.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/no-time-to-die-poster-2.jpg) ![](https://images2.imgbox.com/2f/42/iaMb8WRy_o.png) ![](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b38eecf6ada8fbbe4fc5d58fe3b67346/7cb0138d7e868c0d-da/s1280x1920/bd570d98f367fb6505c3254a5554e638b6c1c016.jpg)

Went The Day Well? ![](https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/original/4FeVtQpRS412b1WRJvKtFTuI2B.jpg) ![](https://filmfreedonia.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/wentthedaywell01.jpg) ![](http://www.davidbordwell.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/went-the-day-2.bmp) ![]() A favourite with me too Mike - incredibly tense, exciting and moving. THE EAGLE HAS LANDED pilfered the central premise and is worth a look, but it is the budget burger version - WENT THE DAY WELL is the quality steak dinner. ![](https://s26.postimg.cc/s8tffwvq1/cheers.gif)

timshelboy Red Joan / Trevor Nunn (2018). Really wanted to like this, watched it for Judi Dench. Turns out, even though Dench is featured prominently on all the poster art and other promotions, Dame Judi is barely in the movie. While there are a couple of good scenes in the goings-on, mostly we get a good looking but talkie, slow moving British period picture. I was distracted through most of it. Only when Dench is under questioning or trying to explain her actions to her astonished barrister son did the screen hold my interest. Disappointing.

Of the 98(?) items listed, I have seen 18. And I have little recollection of some of that 18.
Of those I have seen, I like Went the Day Well? best. My religion forbids me to watch films released before The Maltese Falcon. They were both released in 1941 so it just scrapes in.
Of those I have not seen, I only feel deprived not to have seen Cat People. I do not like horror or supernatural, so I may not like it, even though it is by Jacques Tourneur.

Recommended. Based on a Robert Harris book this is an absorbing, exciting story set (mostly) in Munich during the run-up to World War II. THE FARMER (1977). 7 out 10. This harsh, violent, downbeat seventies exploitation film - a revenge fueled rural melodrama playing out in the backwoods of the South shortly after the end of WW2, has long been unavailable, but it it is now on Blu Ray in pristine quality. Featuring a brutal rape scene, nudity, a sawed-off shotgun and graphic kills, it also has a softer side - an almost leisurely, pastoral first half, a truly surprising ending and some intriguing racial themes - in that most white folk here are racists, except the unsmiling titular world weary war hero, Kyle Martin (Gary Conway) - who hangs his Silver Star on the scarecrow, who just wants to keep the rundown family family out of the bank's grasping hands. Well worth seeking out for hardcore fans of fans of seventies exploitation films, this was a marvelous discovery for me. Finding out why it has been unavailable since its 1977 release - by Columbia, was also fascinating. It's not a lost classic, but it's a flawed, one-of-a-kind seventies flick with some blistering scenes and a heated plot. EDITED to add: While I let my passion blaze away in the paragraph above, it has come to me in the sober light of dawn that there are probably only one or two posters on this board who would find this film worth watching - much less want to hunt it down, and in hindsight I realize that giving it stryker's Highly Recommended seal of approval was perhaps over-the-top. Thus it has been replaced with stryker's seal of conditional approval - if you know the territory and are a serious, obsessed fan give it a go. So, for balance, here is an extract from The New Times Review which appeared on March 10th, 1977: "The Farmer, which opened yesterday at Loews State 2 and other theaters, is a viciously violent R‐rated melodrama that apparently thinks it's preaching against violence while exploiting it." ![](https://images.blu-ray.com/news/upload/14102.jpg) ![](https://readthespirit.com/visual-parables/wp-content/uploads/sites/21/2021/12/Famly.jpg) ![](http://mondo-digital.com/farmer6.jpg) ![](http://mondo-digital.com/farmer2.jpg) ![](http://mondo-digital.com/farmer5.jpg) ![](http://mondo-digital.com/farmer7.jpg) ![](http://mondo-digital.com/farmer4.jpg) ![](http://static1.1.sqspcdn.com/static/f/709071/28304525/1590591061820/nightmarealley-smoke.gif?token=vCOg3ABuTdrykQJrZM5nVZtRe3k%3D)
