Jack Bird: what a moron. How hard is it not to swear at the referee? And then how hard is it to shut your mouth after you get marched 10 yards? Even if it had been an horrendous call rather than a marginal one there's no excuse for such nonsense.

I’ve only just climbed down off the cliff.
Dumbest 5 minutes of football I’ve seen to end a game by the Tigers.

Storm score a couple of late tries to get it to 22-14 but not many will be fooled by that: Parra smashed them. So after a season of maddening inconsistency, the Eels finish in the top 4 and have the match up they want in the first week. A more intriguing qualifying final match up I would like to see.
So 3 of the 4 games are set. Penrith v Parra, Sharks v Cowboys (venue to be determined) and Souths v Roosters (rematch of this week's game, the winner will finish higher). Only small doubt is who Melbourne will play. Broncos need a win over St George and the Tigers to beat the Raiders.

Dragons tip out Brisbane 22-12. Great last try by Feagai.
Will definitely catch up with the Wariors Titans game. I checked the scores and Warriors were up 16-0, but the Titans ended up winning in golden point.
And the Penrith played their NSWRL team against the Cowboys and got flogged.
The 8 participants and match ups are set. Only question is where will the 2nd Qualifying Final be played. It will be in Sydney if Cronulla beat Newcastle today and in Townsville of they lose.

Some kind of hooliganism incident at an A-League soccer game today? Player injured by a metal bucket thrown by fans? What's the story?

Some kind of hooliganism incident at an A-League soccer game today? Player injured by a metal bucket thrown by fans? What's the story? Short Story : Australia does have a very large population of stupid idiotic morons that frequent sporting events. Soccer attracts the stupidest, most idiotic of the lot. Long Story : in the 1980’s Australia had a soccer league that was primarily played by, and clubs organised around, ethnic minorities. It wasn’t in any way subtle either. South Melbourne Hellas. Melbourne Croatia. Sydney Olympic. Marconi Club. St. George Budapest. Not surprisingly, clubs based around ethnicity only attracted the following of those who shared that ethnicity. Now European based football at that time had a slight problem with hooliganism, between firms from rival clubs. Add in centuries old nationalistic prejudices and it’s a recipe for disaster. Shockingly, no matter how hard they tried, the ethnic divisions just kept coming up. Add to that the “volatility” of the said ethnicities - mostly Southern and Eastern Europeans - and you get a sport that isn’t attracting the masses. Eventually, something had to change. And with government assistance (intervention) Football Federation Australia created a new league with 8 new clubs in 2005-06. One of the primary driving forces behind the a-league was clubs that had zero ethic ties at all, and all clubs were open to all and the league was much more ‘Australian’ and very much like most American leagues. However, many hard-core fans of the sport, still to this day, despite all the benefits the new “a league” has brought - they still wish the game was like the old days. Despite many, many people, including myself, saying that we don’t want to go to games where fans light flares, shout racial vilification at each other for 90 minutes, fight each other and carry on like thugs before, during and after games - these fuckwits cannot understand that their behaviour is not on. Then comes today. This round of games had a nationwide planned walk out of games by fans after 20 minutes of play to protest a decision made by the league to play the grand final in Sydney every year, instead of in the city of the side that finished the regular season seeded 1. Not withstanding the fact that this decision injects a badly needed amount of cash into the sport, I understand the fans anger. But what happened today at Melbourne is emblematic of what is wrong with this sport in Australia and it’s fans. Too much anger, too much carry on, too much of the old European hooligan shit. For fucks sake - when will these fucking idiots realise that the sport they want so badly to be mainstream will never be mainstream when it’s fans are the biggest hindrance to it ? The FFA keeps trying to balance what’s best for the league, and what’s best for the fans - and quite often they do what the ‘fans’ want. They’ve almost killed it off for good, and seriously, this could be the final straw.

To be fair the decision to have the Grand Final in Sydney every year, at a time when both the NRL and AFL are trying to get around agreements with the NSW and Victorian governments respectively to move their GFs around, is pretty silly. But yeah, the racial violence is a big turn off to any sane person attending games. I went to a Bulldogs v St George game at the height of all that lebanese muslim v catholic bullshit and I have no intention to subject myself to it again.
