We still need mods - let's just hope there are fewer that listen to butthurt reports.

with moderators come "rules", with those "rules" arbitration, and since arbitration is done by a human it will always be slanted towards his choices, right or wrong. Hence persisting 'trolling' intensifies and forced censorship is increased. But I already see who's running this place. Suit yourselves.

Hence persisting 'trolling' intensifies and forced censorship is increased. Most forums die because of lack of moderation. And there is a fine line between free speech and trolling. Granted, moderation can boil down to a human's own system of value, but nobody wants a lawless forum where trolls and 10-year-old running rampant either. Every single community needs some sort of rules to keep things running. Deal with it.

I don't have to deal with anything; you make your damned deals for yourself.
There is an essential difference between maintaining a forum (maintenance) and 'moderating' it ('moderation' or "so-called moderation").
Of course it is a very good thing to keep a forum running cleanly and in good working order, but exactly what this 'cleaning' is, is what the false moderation is about.
If a forum is kept clean by taking away spam, scams and internet garbage, then that's a very good thing.
If on the other hand that "cleaning" means forcing someone to be a hypocrite or to shut up because his views go against the crowd, that is WRONG no matter who does it.

I'd say a moderator could help out more in case someone is just spamming a thread or spamming a forum with threads.

Freedom of speech or giving an opinion versus spammers, trolls, bullies etc is a big difference. Rules are made to make sure we all can enjoy a place like this without the spam, trolls or bullies and this is the only reason it would need to be moderated or maintained. It doesn't matter how you call it, what matters is how you deal with it.
Looking at the intention of the creator, the only thing that matters is that we all can speak our minds and have discussions about media content as normal human beings and well, the internet is full of those that are only on the internet to make another feel miserable, these people need to be moderated to be able to maintain a site or forum like this.

Never create laws until they are necessary. That being said, a watchful eye does need to be in place, if and when it should become necessary.

i totally agree with the op for what it's worth, thank you, but people are still very clouded from what I see. Maybe it's better this way, let it all fall where it will once again. Funny how I had this SAME discussion back around when imdb had recently started. I know where I stand. Truth stands, however, that as long as there's "someone at the top" who would "control"/'moderate'/silence a poster or posters on his very whim if posters happen to go against his particular likes/preferences/views/the "rules" (i.e., imdb), there is no real freedom of expression for the essential individual not here, not 'there' or anywhere else.

This right here is 'political "correctness"' if I ever saw it, the disgusting thing. Precisely how it starts to creep in if it's left to itself. So-called social conduct rules are very good when everyone is on a same 'playing field' and honesty exists; hardly the case with things now. Otherwise such rules are useless for the truly considerate, and quite useful for those snakes who would cunningly abuse them against true sincerity. A lot of things have gone to hell with good intentions, so good intentions are not enough. re: "as normal human beings", so who or what says what is normal and what is not? Policy of course, "rules". Who makes those rules and based on which criteria? Someone does it, or a 'vote' is held for the sake of 'democracy'. Once those "rules" are set in place, then people had better follow policy to the point of hypocrisy itself, or else they get "moderated" one way or the next by the mighty "moderator" ("moderated" to quite partial degrees, depending on how much this "moderator" is your pal). If they fail to act "normal"/"civil"/"tolerant" according to those rules and to the whim of anyone who may feel 'offended'/'insulted'/'miserable' by a particular interaction, then they are up for "moderation". However, as long as they act according to the "rules" there should be no problem, but you'd better be just a lit-tle extra nice to the "moderator" just in case. That's the first act of psychological bullying against everyone on the board, right there. Violence disguised as "rules for order". Bunch of bullshit if you ask me. So then if they don't fall in line and instead fail to turn into a bunch of hypocrites who fear to speak their minds because of "the rules", they get effectively bullied directly (often verbally) by the "moderators" themselves, the gang, and then eventually they are kicked out because they weren't "nice" or wouldn't play along. Better bend to the boss. Just the kind of environment fit for a snake if you ask me.

Is there a way to block users so if someone's being obnoxious we can just avoid seeing their posts?

Is there a way to block users so if someone's being obnoxious we can just avoid seeing their posts? Click on the name, click on the setting icon and choose block. In your privacy setting you can set how much you want to block. Anyway, I think this board could use some moderation, if only to clean up after trolls when the admin is not here.

Can you please tell me exactly what or who a 'troll' is, and could you show me an example here on this board? Thank you.

I usually don't care for moderation, but given the sort of trolling the IMDb boards had, I'd like to see that kept in check here.
