Great cast, well acted and interesting story involving the military takeover of the government. The interesting part I found is that many of the same issues with Russia are going on to this day. The film was supposed to be futuristic at the time of its release but doesn't really pull that part off. The actors are very good, though. I especially like how Douglas and Lancaster are able to suddenly command the screen. Two incredibly talented actors. Some of the events that lead up to the climax come across as a bit too convenient. The ending is intended to be rousing and even patriotic but I think it falters a bit. But overall a very good film. 8/10

7/10. Tense, but ending somewhat of an anti-climax.

The problem with these Communist reaction movies is they never detail WHY the Communists were criticized. Mass murder, destruction of culture, lack of personal freedom.
Much of Hollywood was close with the Bolsheviks and Marx heritage so they really really went soft on Communism.
Lancaster also did a film on the Kennedy assassination Executive Action which claimed a cabal of white men wanted Kennedy killed because the US had to protect against the non white hordes that would seek resources by the year 2000.
No mention of the heritage of Oswald's assassin Jack Ruby--or the fact that Kennedy was said to oppose military aid to Israel. This conspiracy has never been discussed even to debunk it. We do know that Lyndon Johnson was such a J pawn he tried to cover up the Liberty incident.

I gave the film its first "10" on this pole. Rod Serling's script rules. The President's final speech is not meant to be rousing nor is it anti-climactic. It is full of undercurrents of warnings to the conspirators and the final sudden "The End" with the single bell toll prefigures the "blackout ending" made popular by the "Dogme" style directors and picked up on by mainstream film makers in the 21st century.
