People are not impressed by spfx like they once were--and Star Wars was about FX innovation. The first two broke ground significantly in that area (Death Star trench/Hoth attack/asteroid field--never been done before). After those, they were repeating themselves. ROTJ didn't push the envelope quite as much (biker race and another Death Star trench situation) and people were not as impressed.
The story problems aside, the FX was the real draw for people.
James Bond was more about character in its most famous period--people were going to see Connery---but Star Wars isn't like that. The characters don't matter as much as the spectacle experience. And it is paint by numbers now. It is impossible to change that without changing studio management. But even if you did, Star Wars is still burdened by the fact that its main selling point was FX innovation--and by 1999 other movies had taken a lot of their potential ideas, just as action films did the same with James Bond.
No one cares about James Bond like they did in the 60s. The enthusiasm is gone. All people wonder about is will he be diverse.
The best way to renovate space fantasy is to do something totally outside of Star Wars. Because that would generate more creative enthusiasm and spark ideas and performance energy. In theory.
Star Wars will never recapture the feeling of the originals--time to move on. Of course the studios won't because they can't think beyond their limited thinking.
Star Wars is like a corpse and the spin off films are its maggots.
Or if you prefer a more Star Warsian metaphor, the brand is like the Emperor--ancient and corrupt, and the spin off films are his slugs.
