After a six year hiatus, Bond is brought successfully in the 1990s in what is definitely Brosnan's best. Was also my introduction to the series.
Bond chasing after the plane is still fucking rad.
Makes me want to play Goldeneye yet again on the Nintendo 64. Lots of hours spent on that one.
OO6 makes a good villain, an equal to Bond and someone who knows him well. Speaking of villains, Famke Janssen is something else as the sex freak Onatopp, who gets off killing people.
How did OO6 survive getting shot in the head? It's easy to say Ourumov was firing blanks, but he kills another soldier moments later for firing at the gas tanks. Plus, was OO6 always bad or just after the explosion?

Brosnan's best Bond movie although it feels like it was a Timothy Dalton Bond movie that was changed for Brosnan.
Great N64 video game.
I like Sean Bean as the villain as well. Gotta love Janssen as Xenia. "She always did enjoy a good squeeze."

Terrific Bond movie. Definitely the best for Pierce Brosnan’s run. In my top five installments.

Brosnan was unlucky in that he was a great actor for Bond who unfortunately got such average/poor scripts.
The first two acts of GoldenEye, culminating with the tank/train showdown, are terrific. After that it becomes boring.
One notable feature is it is the first film in the series to acknowledge the wrongs that UK committed against other nations' people.

Possibly my favorite, not just of Brosnan’s, but in the entire franchise overall.

This one has grown on me thru the years, initially I was disappointed but have realized that aside from the ridiculous score (what the hell was that dude thinking?), it is actually a pretty strong entry, but unlike most of you, not my favorite from Brosnan. I'd long been waiting for him to take the helm, having been a big fan of Remington Steele. Pretty kick-ass title song, 006 was a formidable foe, Xenia was return to the great henchman, and Judi Dench made for a solid, no-nonsense M.

Around my #10-15
It's pretty very good I guess. Although it hasn't aged as strongly, trying to cross so many Bond tropes & dot every last Bond nuance, re-watches become less impactful. Brosnan was the right guy at the right time. Bean is a solid villain. Alas, the actual GoldenEye plot is pretty silly, & that IT nerd guy is pretty insufferable.
My fav cinematic nitpick: During the tank chase, there is no way a truck would ever be carrying a full slate of empty Perrier cans. The product placement is there, & not having a city block full of liquid product is there... it's funny & ridiculous.

10/10 A great Bond film that gets better with each viewing.

Um no, I said the title song was pretty kick-ass...that's a compliment.

This was undeniably Pierce Brosnan's best Bond film and a welcome return of 007 following the end of the Cold War. 8/10.

I forgot to add - it has one of my fav needle drops (song segue) of any film ever.
Once Bond recovers flight in the plane, soars... the base explodes behind him... that music cue is boss.

I couldn't help but notice some similarities to earlier Bond adventures. For example, a space based weapon was previously featured in Diamonds Are Forever. And the secret submerged dish (in reality the now destroyed Arecibo Observatory) is reminiscent of the hidden volcano base in You Only Live Twice. Overall, a solid movie and well deserving of a quote thread of its own. James Bond Movie Quote Adventures Subject | Movie Title | Created By | Created On |
