I don’t mean the most popular, I mean that in terms of general recognizability, is Superman #1? Religious and mythological figures don’t count, by the way.

If I had to pick only one, it probably is Superman. Everyone knows who and what Superman is, even if they don't care for Superman. The same goes for Batman. And Spider-Man. So I would say it's the Holy Trinity of Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man. Hence why they are also generally the most popular comic-book superhero movies.

I think Batman almost certainly passed him sometime in the last few decades.

Yeah I'd say Batman at this point. Spider-Man may even have passed him.

Superman or Mickie Mouse. So then it’s Mighty Mouse?

I think it’s more of a tie between him and Batman.
Spider-Man is definitely a good runner up.

My thoughts exactly. Although certainly more so for Holmes than Tarzan.

You could go to a kid in a third world country and show him a picture of Tarzan or Sherlock Holmes and he'd be able name the character? You could ask that same kid, "Who is Sherlock Holmes," and he'd be able to answer? I doubt it. I'm a fan of both of those guys, but I don't think either of them are in the top 50 at this point.

Too bad a Coke bottle does not qualify as a Character because that would win !

As I said, certainly more so for Holmes than Tarzan. There are still films and TV series being made about him... or some variation of him. And it's not just kids who are aware of "pop culture".

It's not just kids, but that's the deciding factor in my argument. Any adult in the world can tell you about Sherlock Holmes or Superman. Children on the other hand could identify any number of superheroes while I don't think they're anywhere near as familiar with Holmes. The most iconic character would resonate with the largest demographic, I would think. Superheroes have inundated pop culture, and what's more, most of them have their own logo. It's all about branding these days.

I enjoyed a wide variety of fictional characters as a child... the Doctor, Flash Gordon, James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan... and even Batman and Superman to a lesser extent. There was no one really dominant figure... And I think the same is true now. Sure superheroes are popular, as are dinosaurs, monsters, spies, wizards and so much more. It's a constant revolving door of reappearing icons. However, you're welcome to your opinion, but I'll stick to mine, thanks all the same.

Over the past decade... yeah, maybe. But for the last century -- counting back from today -- it's Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, Dracula, the Frankenstein Monster, Superman and James Bond.
