When the David Lynch version came out, I distinctly remember wondering if people who unlike me had NOT read the book could have understood anything.

I haven't seen the new one yet, but if you had trouble following the story - I'd suggest the SciFi channel mini-series DUNE and the follow-up CHILDREN OF DUNE.
