Usually shows simply "write out" a character when the actor or actress that played them leaves. On occasion though, shows have elected to replace a particular character with a new actor/actress in the same role......a notable example being the show Bewitched, which chose to replace not just one, but three characters with different performers........ Dick Sargent as " Darrin Stephens", replacing the original actor, Dick York.........Sandra Gould as " Gladys Kravitz", replacing Alice Pearce..........and Kasey Rogers as " Louise Tate", replacing Irene Vernon. Dick York - "Darrin Stephens" (#1) Dick Sargent - "Darrin Stephens" (#2) Alice Pearce - "Gladys Kravitz" (#1) Sandra Gould - "Gladys Kravitz" (#2) Irene Vernon - "Louise Tate" (#1) Kasey Rogers - "Louise Tate" (#2) www.closerweekly.com/posts/bewitched-cast-a-look-at-the-joys-and-tragedies-of-their-lives/Any other shows you can think of that didn't "write out" a character when the actor/actress playing them left, and instead hired a new performer to play the same character ?? There's the example of Fresh Prince of Bel Air with Vivian, played by Janet Hubert replaced by Daphne Reid. I wish that I watched more classic TV so that I could give a better answer.

Due to his passing which in my opinion never should've happened in the first place, my newest favorite person named Northern Calloway had to be replaced for the Sesame Street show. David was his character name and Mr. Hooper's place is where his character's job was. I love seeing him get to be the one who starts this song and finishes it.....I will never have enough of him. God bless you and his family always!!! Holly P.S. Go here to listen to the album that I couldn't have been more blessed to get in the mail yesterday...Northern, if you see this message from where ever you have been all of these years, I love you so much and I am so sorry about the raw deal that I believe you were stuck with. As for those who I believe are truly responsible for it, I can only pray that the Lord had in mind a special plan for their kind.

On Hogan's Heroes, Ivan Dixon played Sgt. James Kinchloe for five seasons. For the sixth and final season, Kenneth Washington replaced Dixon. Although technically not the same character, Washington's Sergeant Richard Baker assumed all of Kinchloe's duties on the show. Ivan DixonKenneth Washington
The original Star Trek was cancelled in 1969. In 1973 it was resurrected as an animated series for what was essentially a fourth season. However, there's wasn't enough money in the budget to bring back Walter Koenig who played Chekov in Seasons 2 and 3. To save money, as well as to show off more alien characters, Chekov was replaced as navigator by Lt. Arex, voiced by James "Scotty" Doohan. Doohan reportedly voiced 34 different characters on the animated series. Walter KoenigJames Doohan

John Brown, the second Harry Morton on The Burns and Allen Show, lasted just a few episodes until he was removed from the show as a result of the 1950s blacklist. He was unable to find much work and died of a heart attack a few years afterwards.
When the 1960s sitcom Hazel was cancelled, it came back on another network with Hazel working for another, somewhat younger, family, her original employers being shipped off to Iraq over the summer. The young son stayed behind with the new family (his aunt and uncle) so he could stay in school. Yeah, okay.
Midway through the run of The Jeffersons, Mike Evans, who had appeared as son Lionel since All in the Family, left for a few years to write for the series Good Times; he was replaced by actor Damon Evans (no relation). Apparently tired of writing "Dy-no-mites!" for Jimmy Walker, Evans returned as Lionel for the final season or so.

Wow.......don't know that I've ever heard something like that happening before! Any idea if Bel Geddes "comeback" was in any pre-planned (i.e., that they knew ahead of time she might, or would be coming back for sure?) ?? SAVE FERRIS

Dr WhoActors who have played Dr WhoChanges to the cast were a regular fixture of the series - only five of the series' 26 seasons (the 8th, 9th, 22nd, 25th and 26th) did not include an arriving or departing regular cast member. Only two regular characters did not get a departure scene: the character of Dodo Chaplet disappeared halfway through the 1966 serial "The War Machines"; the character Liz Shaw simply did not return after the 1970 season. The departures were explained in dialogue in subsequent episodes. Actors Mary Tamm and Colin Baker did not get leaving scenes - their characters (Romana and the Doctor, respectively) returned at the beginning of the following season played by different actors. However, their characters belonged to a race whose appearance, it had already been established, would frequently change thus making the change of actors easy to explain.

Harriette Winslow on Family Matters. Replace Jo Marie Peyton with...who the hell was that pale faced straight haired woman?
And WHY is it every time a sitcom replaces a black actress, they go from darker skin to lighter skin? Harriette, Aunt Vivian, Claire on My Wife and Kids, etc., NEVER the other way around.
