His first in the Age of Madness trilogy, which is set some 30 years or so after the First Law trilogy, and features many of the characters from that original trilogy but who are now in their 50s or 60s. The story focuses more on their children tho. The Dogmans daughter Rikke, King Jezals son Orso, Finree dan Brocks son Leo, Arch Lecter Gloktas adopted daughter Savine, and Black Calders son in the north Stour Nightfall. Focusing on the ensuing war between the North led by Stour, not king yet but battlefield general and a somewhat reckless head of steam...against the Dogmans area which is aligned with the Union and King Jezal. Theres a lovely balance of personal growth and plot elements. Not only is the union at war with northmen but the peasants are revolting and taking over cities and randomly setting people on fire due to poor treatment. The Union is really in for it. For a first book in a trilogy they really did set a lot of wheels in motion. This world is chaos at the moment and the events of the book only go to further that. One character i loved but didn't mention is Gunnar Broad. A veteran of the north who returns home to find his farm basically getting run out by the local governor, who's got a temper as bad as Logen Ninefingers when pressed for it...and finds himself pressed for it over and over again as he kind of has a ptsd thing going as well as a lust for blood. He's basically a surrogate Logen but with a family still in tact to look after. Clover is another great character under Stour Nightfall who is critical of everything but totally and unforgivingly out for himself. He had some great quotes. Joe Abercrombie can pretty much do no wrong for me. His style of novel is exactly what Im looking for most of the time and Ive been putting off this series for a year because I didn't want to burn through all Abercrombies released material...but I'll be all caught up before you know it. I just love this world.
