I absolutely love this alternate universe where Uhura seems non-binary or lesbian (nothing wrong with it, I love the new actress), the tech is vastly advanced than the one in TOS, Spock is different (and not because it's played by another actor), and everything seems 100% different ---- as far as Paramount officially declares that this an alternate universe, no matter what.
Star Trek: Discovery + Star Trek: Strange New Worlds = same alternate universe.
Enough with the forced continuity. Enough. Time to grow up over that.
In my mind, even "Enterprise" is an alternate universe. As simple as that, TOS has no prequels, until they wouldn't make one with a similar tech, similar design, similar screenplays and different characters played by new actors.
The Kelvin Timeline was an alternate universe from the start; Spock Prime ended in an alternate universe and altered the past of this alternate universe.
Alternate universes. That's fine. Nothing wrong.

With all the time travel done in Trek over the decades any number of alternate timelines could've been created, so another timeline where similar events took place works for me.

I just started watching and I don't hate it but the first episode was rough around the edges.

Everything that is off the TNG timeline e.g. canon, is not Star Trek. I don't care how they label it.

I think the producers/etc. have said it's Prime Timeline (so same at TOS) but, I'd like to pretend they didn't say that and it's within another timeline. That way I can ship whomever I please without having to worry about canon.

I haven't seen it. I heard it's pretty good. But I understand why you feel that way. One of the reasons I bailed on Discovery after a season. It just felt too new. They make no efforts to make it seem like it's prior to TOS. Enterprise did. Discovery and this show are it's own world imo. Agreed. I see 3 timelines:
1. TOS, TNG, the movies from each, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Enterprise, Picard. 2. Pineverse. 3. Discovery and Strange New Worlds.

I haven't watched the show but saw some publicity photos-at first I thought it Pike was Kirk. The woman officer costume looks good actually for the retro look they went for.
Holy F the Gorn looks feeble though. Looks worse than the Enterprise version.

I can't understand for the life of me why people make prequels and go out of their way to make established characters or species look so different. Turned me off to Discovery with the Klingons.

I would say it has to do with merchandising but somehow I doubt that is the reason. It's fiddling for the sake of fiddling (as Rome burns). Like someone has to justify their job or they feel a new design would increase viewer interest. Making it look nothing like the original Gorn would decrease interest to me.
It looks like any runofthemill generic lizard.

That's two of us who said changing the look drives us away. I know I have seen others complain about the Klingon look too. Ratings are what makes a show and I don't think there's exactly a huge market Strange New Worlds toys.

Isn't there another change they made--I heard Kirk showed up in an episode and he was criticized for being nothing like Kirk at all. Acting like Jim Carrey or something. Even if they said it was his brother---wasn't Sam Kirk his identical twin? So what good would that do? And how come Pike looks more like Kirk?
I doubt kids are into Star Trek toys like they were decades ago.
I used to set McCoy on fire and drop him into a bucket of water like a stunt man.
Confession: sometimes I deliberately missed the bucket.

He's a doctor so he can do self-healing. Actually the face on the doll was kind of annoying so I guess I felt if I had to use one of them for a stunt man it was him. I'm a doctor, not a fireman!
