While I don't really wear a mask anywhere anymore, I don't think wearing one on a plane is the worst idea. You're going on vacation, people around you on the flight are invariably sneezing and coughing without so much as even thinking about covering their faces (because of their rights, or something). Granted, they need to be wearing one too for max effectiveness, but if I'm going to the Caribbean (or anywhere), the last thing I want is to catch a cold and spend several days in bed.

I still have to teach with a mask on. Never mind that grade school teachers don't. Never mind that I don't have to wear one when I walk through a hallway or even when I'm meeting with a student in my office (where I'm physically much closer to a student) - - I cannot teach without wearing a mask.

Shit like this is where everything just goes off the rails and makes the whole thing performative and stupid. Back when people were still getting hospitalized and dying, yeah it all made sense to just wear one as much as possible. But now, with vaccines and boosters making it so that even if you do catch it, the chances of you getting anything more than cold symptoms** for a day or two are remote, then it's time for this to stop. It's like, when they made me wear a mask while walking into the Nassau Coliseum last year, but the second you walk in you can take it off, that makes it dumb. If you make me wear it the whole time, then so be it. Walking into a restaurant with it and taking it off at the table...stupid. ** Yes, some people are still actually getting sick, even with boosters, but the amount of people getting truly sick and dying is super low these days.

And those who are are largely unvaccinated. My wife hated it when, after we'd be wearing masks in the restaurant to order and take our seats, we'd take them off to eat and I'd say "Don't worry kids, once we start eating, the virus knows to stay away from our open mouths". As you say, it's performance theater at this point.

Who really cares if you have to wear a mask? Itās no big deal. Iām required to wear one at work. For me thatās 12hrs a day and 60hrs a week. I donāt even think about it anymore. I just put it on and go about my day. I still wear one inside public places too like grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. People who act like masks requirements are some assault on their freedom are ridiculous. If you think mask requirements are oppressive you have no idea what oppressive rules actually are.
I literally saw someone post on Twitter today āmasks are no longer required on plains; we are taking our country backā. What? One of the most foolish things I ever read in my life. Maybe masks work? Maybe they donāt? I tend to believe they are effective. Even if they arenāt they are causing zero harm. They are of no inconvenience. Itās the simplest act to put a mask on. It requires no effort. So even if there is a .000001 chance a mask saves a life I think masking up is worth doing.

When places require it, I put it on. Fun fact, there isnāt one law on the books anywhere in the US which mandates that you wear shoes inside a restaurant. Not a single one. Yet nobody acts like wearing shoes is some sort of government overreach or life-ruining infringement upon their freedom, even though restaurants require shoes (and shirts). The concept of āgovernment overreachā with respect to mask wearing is nothing more than a political cudgel wielded by people trying to force a narrative in furtherance of their own ends.

There were families on the planes, people who arranged to take trips with the understanding that their very young children would be on planes with everyone wearing masks. If I had children too young to be vaccinated and discovered mid-flight that people were taking their masks off, I'd be upset. Now I wonder if any of these children will end up getting COVID. These airlines might be facing some lawsuits.
