He sure was memorable in Tremors as a blue collar everyman. He fit that role well.

Tremors was where I first noticed him but he was always a welcome presence in any film. From Escape from Alcatraz to Joe Dirt.
RIP

Was always hoping he could reunite with Kevin Bacon and take on graboids once more in another Tremors film Or an Escape From Alcatraz 2 with him and Eastwood chilling in South America. Have him and his brother attend their mom's funeral in drag (supposedly what really happened).

Anyone else ever see Cast A Deadly Spell, the HBO movie he starred in? It was a lot of fun, and made good use of that 'retro' quality he had going for him.

I always liked that movie, criminally underrated. He had good chemistry with Joel Grey, would have been fun to see it continue.

Actors I've followed through their career, tend to be actors who've worked with directors I follow. This was always the case with Fred Ward, going back to my schooldays. He worked with Philip Kaufman twice. He worked with Robert Altman twice, and his protege, Alan Rudolph, too. He worked with old friends George Armitage and Jonathan Demme, who'd worked with Roger Corman. He worked with Dennis Hopper on both sides of the camera.

'Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding' - Elton John
Fred Ward was a boxer and a military man. He was a formidable action performer in his prime, always in shape, chiselled to the bone, noted within the industry for his stamina. This helped him bag choice character roles on tough location shoots with action supremos like Clint Eastwood, Walter Hill and Ted Kotcheff.
Fred Ward
Interview with Fred Ward [The Bobbie Wygant Archive]
He had a rangey expression and lightness of touch you'd associate with the best of the screwball era. His work in films like David Greenwalt's 'Secret Admirer' (1985), Jim Abrahams' 'Big Business' (1988) and Ron Underwood's 'Tremors' (1990) showed what he was all about.
Fred Ward was a travelling man. He spent serious time in France and Italy. He travelled America. He travelled the world.
Thanks for the movies, Mr. Ward, and for many great memories ... see you on the other side ...

I was surprised he chose to do Naked Gun 33 1/3, but he sure made the most of his villain role.

FRED WARD was a legend to me. He was one of my top 10 actors. I'm devastated.
REMO WILLIAMS is an adventure masterpiece, and a big cult classic. In Italy, it was a huge success.
TIMERIDER is one of the most wonderful time travel movies in history.
I loved each role that he played in his astonishing career & life.
You're my hero, Fred. Rest in peace.

"So sad to hear about Fred Ward. When it came to battling underground worms I couldn’t have asked for a better partner. I will always remember chatting about his love of Django Reinhardt and jazz guitar during our long hot days in the high desert. Rest In Peace Fred."
