What didn't he do? during a long career he acted in almost anything, from comedy to drama, and even made musicals on Broadway. One of those versatile actors that we sometimes forget. This year we celebrate 100 years of his birth that happened to be in Spokane Darren McGavin (1922–2006)
Yes he did play the king in The King and I revivals in the 1960''s. with diva Risë Stevens. He was actually a set painter at Columbia Pictures, that has some experience from Broadway and one thing led to another once in Hollywood. Including playing the lead in at least three TV-serials, Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer 1958–1959, Riverboat 1959–1961 and Kolchak: The Night Stalker 1974–1975 He acted in over 180 movies and television productions between 1945 and 2019, and when that wasn't enought theatre productions al over USA and even at Brussels Worlds Fair. Replacing an earmarked role for Dean Martin in Jerry Lewis vehicle The Delicate Delinquent 1958, after the Dean and Jerry fight A Christmas Story 1983, probably Darren's most beloved role. And maybe that is how we shall remember him, despite his looks, very versatile actor that we sometimes forget. Thanks for watching! Opinions of all kinds are welcome!

I think of him first as Sinatra's "pusher" in THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM... but yes he turned up in a wide assortment of movies in a long career. TRIBES and THE NIGHT STALKER were both highly regarded TV movies of their time. Prolific on TV (scored the holy trinity of LOVE BOAT/FANTASY ISLAND/MURDER SHE WROTE guest shots...) as well as AIRPORT 77 on the big screen Would any Mickey Spillane fans recommend his TV Mike Hammer ? Most wanted THE CHALLENGERS this one made for TV but bumped from schedules and released as a movie in Europe and belatedly on US TV

“Christmas Story” is one of my favorites, too. Who could ever forget the Leg Lamp? One that I watch occationally in the fan favorite from Mission: Impossible. "The Seal" S3, Ep9, November 8, 1967. Not really a villain, McGavin plays a gazillionaire who keeps an artifact on the top floor of his office building in a room with electrified walls, pressure plates under the floor, and sound detectors. The M:I force need to steal it. A lot of fun. For timshelboy , I watched the pilot episode of Mike Hammer a few years ago and reported: Episodes are on YouTube and won’t take up much of your time to watch one if you care to check it out.

I never forget Darren McGavin. The Night Stalker movie & series is still one of my favorites. He was absolutely perfect in that role.
I didn't know he'd acted with Jerry Lewis. And I didn't know about A Christmas Story.

I enjoyed seeing Darren McGavin with Adam Sandler in 'Billy Madison' (1995).
I love it when he says "Well, listen, don't you think you better go to bed? Big day tomorrow. A day filled with daiquiris and Nintendos and jack-off magazines..."

In a 'Cade's County' episode he was an assassin-for-hire who was also a Korean War buddy of Sheriff Glenn Ford.
His character had a familiar name -- 'Courtney Vance'
