Ben-Hur - well, they don't really come much larger than life of their time than this. Rebel Without a Cause - birth of post-war youth? Runway for the next 40yrs+ of cultural influences. The Searchers - the western, John Wayne, John Ford, Monument Valley... a pillar of its time. Vertigo - forever ahead of its time via the master.

This is too tough to narrow down to four. Any other decade, maybe, but the fifties is easily the greatest decade in film, because films were made for people instead of for the mob of control freaks.
