A decent action/adventure sequel to the first film for the most part. Just a shame it falls apart and doesn't recover once the T-Rex gets loose in San Diego. More violent/graphic compared to the first film and the characters aren't as memorable. Certainly not a bad movie, but one of Spielberg's weaker ones. I do remember the large hype for the movie when it first came out and seeing it opening weekend. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - 2.5 out of 4 stars"It turns out that madman Attenborough left a menagerie of dinosaurs behind on a second island--and wants to sponsor an expedition there. Goldblum knows the dangers, but his girlfriend is already there and he's forced to follow, along with assorted others. Havoc ensues. Completely contrived sequel to JURASSIC PARK benefits from Goldblum's depreciating dialogue and superior special effects. Enough cliffhanger-style action scenes to make up for the lulls. Followed in 2001 by JURASSIC PARK III."

I loved it as a kid and I still like it now. Way better than any other Jurassic sequel.
Also probably the most violent movie of the franchise.
While the how we come to get a T-Rex loose in San Diego doesn't make any sense, I never really had issues with the sequence.

I've always enjoyed it and have never understood why everyone seems to dislike the T-Rex loose in the city part.

Spielberg's heart doesn't really seem into it and it shows - "I beat myself up... growing more and more impatient with myself... It made me wistful about doing a talking picture, because sometimes I got the feeling I was just making this big silent-roar movie... I found myself saying, 'Is that all there is? It's not enough for me'."
The best character in the movie right here -

The best character in the movie right here - I don't know if it's true or not, but I've heard that he was given the choice between making a sequel to Jurassic Park or a sequel to E.T. and he wisely chose Jurassic Park. An E.T. sequel would probably suck. Anyway, he did The Lost World that after Schindler's List and it probably got to him. That's probably the reason why the Lost World is arguably the most violent and dark of the franchise.

I always enjoyed it. The messaging is admittedly pretty muddled. But it’s a solid “dinosaus amok” movie. And yes, Pete Postlethwaite is the MVP of the movie as Roland Tembo. He deserved his own spin-off.

Just from reading the synopsis, it sounds like nightmare fuel. And yeah, when you follow up Schindler's List with another dinosaur movie, it's probably not as artistically fulfilling.

the script is kind of weak with some irritating characters but the film is still well directed by Spielberg with some really intense and memorable moments (the trailers over the cliff, the T-Rex sticking its head in the tent, the Raptors in the long grass), a fantastic score from John Williams, probably the best blend of animatronics and CGI in the series, Jeff Goldblum of course and Pete Postlethwaite as the awesome Roland Tembo

It had a beginning, middle, and a definite ending, and we had nowhere to take it except to go home with him. Nor did I want to bring him back to Earth for a second time." "I think a sequel to E.T. would do nothing but rob the original of its virginity. People only remember the latest episode, while the pilot tarnishes."

It's a pretty decent sequel, though not on the same level of greatness as the original. I think this and the third movie are on par with each other.

I quite like it, though its Bayformers San Diego stuff is a mess.

Enjoyed it, and I'm surprised by how frosty a reception it got from critics. I also don't hate the San Diego sequence like everyone else, apparently.
