I appreciate it how seamlessly Cronenberg was able to combine sci-fi, horror, thriller and action movie elements into one story. The Terminator did the same few years later with even bigger success. Steven Lack is not a good actor but I've gotten over his "acting" after watching the movie enough times. Small budget and Canadian locations give it a certain realistic rough look similar to Cronenberg's other early works. Great movie.

Rather decent, if middle-ground Cronenberg film. Although I think it gets better upon each viewing and you can't go wrong with Ironside.

Great film, but the lead is so terrible.

Rabid and Scanners are two Cronenbergs that I thought were a bit boring when I first watched them but both are among my favorites now. It took me some time to notice that the ending is not as simple as it may first seem. IMDb Scanners board had a good discussion about the final words and how they could be interpreted.

One of the few horror movies that could actually benefit from a remake to be honest. Only if it was done right though.

I love Scanners! It's my second favorite Cronenberg film. As another user commented, it's a perfect combination of horror, sci-fi and action thriller. I'll even defend Stephen Lack's supposedly lackluster performance. His character was supposed to be "barely human" due to him being a master scanner like his older brother. He had no place in society and could barely interact with other people. Hence, he was supposed to appear dull and be devoid of personality. I think Lack's portrayal was spot on. I couldn't imagine his character being portrayed any other way.

I don't mind Stephen Lack's performance. He did well enough. That being said, Michael Ironside really steals the show. The guy always plays a great villain.
And of course, gotta love the exploding head scene.

I've really grown to appreciate Rabid with each repeat viewing. Classic Cronenberg.
