Cameos: The MovieHonestly I wouldn’t find this exciting at all. It’s just a superficial thrill. The Illuminati was the worst part of Dr Strange 2. Tony Stark and Steve Rogers variants? Sure. Jessica Alba’s Sue Storm? No, thanks. Seriously, do we need this? That moment in Endgame was awesome, and the best part is it was earned. They've spent phase four trying to recreate a similar feel in No Way Home, Multiverse of Madness, probably Quantumania, and now Secret Wars. I want these movies to be about something, not just an endless list of Easter Eggs. The stuff they used to throw into the background or into throwaway post-credit scenes has now taken over the actual narrative of the films themselves. At this rate, all of the MCU will have the tone of Deadpool or She-Hulk. This is not a good thing.

Trying to chase that high is a mistake. And I don’t know who even cares about seeing the old Fantastic Four cast return! Variants like Captain Carter are fun, but they’re also nothing more than a gimmick. And I’m still struggling to see the point of having Krasinki as a one-off Reed that won’t return for the actual F4 movie. Whatever variants we see should be actual developed characters, not just “oh look, it’s that guy from that other franchise” cameos. The only interesting variants so far are the Dr Strange ones because they mirror our version in interesting, meaningful ways.

The only interesting variants so far are the Dr Strange ones because they mirror our version in interesting, meaningful ways. It made for a fun scene, I'm just glad the movie didn't revolve around it. Winks and nods here and there are fine, I just want the story to be about more than that. No Way Home didn't do anything for me because I didn't want to relive earlier shitty Spider-Man movies. And ultimately, the movie existed purely for nostalgic fan service, there was literally no other reason for that movie to exist. This is what I meant by Endgame earning the portal scene. It was ten years of build up across multiple titles in one connected franchise, all coming together. The overarching narrative was woven into each and every one of those movies over an eleven year span. People didn't love it simply because they recognized everyone, they loved it because every character had value to the story somewhere along the line. No Way Home was just two hours of winks. "Remember this guy from this shit movie everyone hated a few years ago, which has absolutely nothing to do with anything?" There was no payoff to a theme a decade in the making, just a bunch of fluff. And yet...everyone loved it. So who am I to tell Feige he's wrong? Maybe the crowd will eat that shit up. "Here's Jessica Alba. Here's Liev Schreiber. Here's Kris Kristofferson. Here's an animated Rogue from the cartoon." It'll be nothing but references and cameos, like that Chip & Dale movie that came out this year. It's sad because if that's the route they go, all the criticism of the MCU will be 100% accurate. At that point it is just a theme park ride. You drive by a bunch of visuals and chuckle, there's nothing to really absorb. The old complaint was that MCU movies were just commercials for the next installment. I always thought that was stupid criticism; Every installment moves the story forward in any book series, television show, etc. That's how story structure works. This would be much worse. These movies will devolve into nothing but commercials for what's already come before. The self-referential bullshit already reached a crescendo in She-Hulk, now they want to bring that nonsense to the big screen. Come see characters literally wink at the camera for two hours and ask the audience why they're watching this. Just don't be surprised if you can no longer answer that question.

I’m a HUGE Raimi Spider-Man fan and when Doc Ock shows up I should be excited. But it’s very hollow because as you said it has zero connection with the current story. It’s just random and meta. Same with Xavier/Stewart in Dr Strange. I admit I do enjoy No Way Home though for what it is- but I don’t think it will work at all if they try to do it again. I’m confident they won’t bring in any more old franchises though. At most we might see Tobey, Andrew and Hugh Jackman again. If Feige seriously thinks bringing back Nic Cage as Ghost Rider or Alba as Sue Storm will have audiences cheering he must have really lost touch. Of course, She Hulk got made and I still can’t believe that met the studio’s standards. But DisneyPlus was always gonna be a shit show for mediocre crap. I am still confident we will never see anything that terrible on the theatrical front.

Yeah, I enjoyed the Raimi films (well the first two); and I even got a kick out of No Way Home, but I have no reason to ever watch it again because it wasn't about anything. Going forward, I don't have anything against bringing back classic characters-- but let's make sure they're here for a reason and they're here to stay, not just "Hey it's Wolverine!" for a scene or the second or third act of one movie. It seems like Feige is hellbent to put any beloved character into a MCU movie, where they should've been all along. But that ship has sailed. I don't want an incoherent mess onscreen just so we can say we saw Jackman's Wolverine interact with Downey's Iron Man. (Ok, seeing that typed out on my screen actually makes it sound kind of rad.) Seriously though, I want movies I can watch again and again, not just a collection of easily disposable trailer moments.

It seems, well to me at least, test Feige wants to do a big celebration type of film by including characters from past marvel films. Like celebrating how far Marvel has come since the early creation of Marvel Studios. With the multiverse, it's a easy way to do that.
Is it really necessary? Of course not and I don't blame anyone for not being interested in seeing something like this.
But for me personally I think this is a fun idea. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something like this and I say why the hell not?

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something like this and I say why the hell not? I can understand that too. I have seen No Way Home like four times and I still really enjoy it for what it is. And I can’t say I wouldn’t enjoy seeing my boy Huge AckMan on screen in the MCU. But I do think the more exciting use of the multiverse is to introduce interesting unique variants like Sinister Strange. I’m thinking the Thor Corps with Frog Thor and maybe some fun interesting variants played by the MCU actors like Captain Carter, but featured for the whole movie so they can be properly developed. I think we’ll probably get all of the above, so I’m not particularly concerned.
