I'm pre diabetic and the doctor told me I have to eat like a diabetic, of course he just said no sugars or carbs but i really don't know what I can eat. I'm allergic to fish, seafood, fresh tomatoes and cannot eat just an egg (my throat closes up) but I can eat things with egg in them like quiche. I cannot stand stuff like oatmeal, sweet potatoes, yams and butternut squash. I would appreciate it if someone can come up with 12 foods I can eat without worry. I googled diabetic diets but Many of them contradict each other. Can I eat pita bread and hummus and black and Kalamata olives? And Feta cheese? I will still cheat from time to time because I refuse to give up stuffed cabbage rolls. Any advice would be greatly appreciated . Thanks in advance.
p.s. I was off the boards for a while because I was in the hospital with double pneumonia and severe diarrhea. I had the double vaccine for pneumonia a few years ago but I still got it. Today is the first day I feel energetic enough to come here but I'm still very tired.

That's awful. Sending hugs your way ๐ซ๐ซ๐ซ
Not diabetic but have a friend who is. I'd say avoid the pita.
You want foods with a low glycemic index. You can reduce starch levels of pasta, potatoes, and rice by cooking, cooling to cold in fridge, then reheating.
Avoid juices.
I'm going to have to add later due to low battery.

Thanks so much, this will really be helpful. I admit I will cheat a little but will cheat with a smaller portion. I will still have a stuffed cabbage roll once a month and tomorrow we're going to have Stouffers Salisbury steal with mashed potatoe - I only eat 1/2 Salisbury steak and this time I will just have a tablesppon of mashed potatoes. I'm not a diabetic yet so I hope a little bit of cheating won't hurt too much.

If it's rare, I wouldn't even think of it as cheating.
I noticed they added "unhealthy" foods to that glycemic food list and added higher-fat things like avocado and nuts to the foods to avoid. Experts disagree. Just don't eat a lot. Low-fat foods can leave you craving.
More important is staying active and getting enough sleep.

I'm diabetic and probably don't eat properly. The trick is carb counting. So, on the nutrition label, look at carbs. 30-45g of carb is a meal. 15g of carb is a snack. Try to eat more protein and fibre. Avoid anything that becomes flour (corn, rice [although converted rice and brown is ok], pasta [go for non-white if possible, but I use regular]. Cheese, yes. Eggs, yes. Meat, yes. Fruit, sure. Fruit over juice. A nutritionist once told me that a bottle of juice is 4 apples - would you eat that many at once? See if you have any kind of diabetes education in your area and go. Please avoid "lite" foods as they remove oil and add sugar. If you really want salad dressing, mayo, syrup - just use a little. I WILL eat sweet foods, but will eat them in the morning so that I can burn them off over the day. Someone mentioned the glycemic index - you can see that online I'm giving you a link to diabetes Canada which has an excellent website to start with: www.diabetes.ca/managing-my-diabetes/tools---resources/glycemic-index-education-portal Let me know if this helps and I can send more stuff your way. I've been diabetic about 15 years now. The hardest thing is to get portions down. And I have real "sugar" days.

Awww, hugs to you. I have 3 family members who are diabetic. As others have said-carbs. But especially some fruit and vegetables because some are high in sugar.

WOW WKM, I hope you are feeling better. My daughter gets pneumonia at least once a year. I know how weak she gets. NJ's article looks good. I'll see if I find others. Your food likes/dislikes really limit what I would tell you. My husband's A1C was high. He lost 20 lbs and it went into the normal range. That's him He eats lots of stuff he shouldn't, but just not as much ๐ฅด

WKM, I think for pre-diabetics a daily exercise routine is vital, too. Did your doctor say anything about the benefits of light daily exercise? I would try to incorporate walking - and if possible, riding a bike - into your daily routine.

wickedkittiesmom Yes, I have to increase my exercise but not only for the prediabetes but also because my osteoporosis has become severe. I have to do weight bearing exercises for that, so I ordered some small dumbbells from Amazon and will get them on Monday. I been walking in the backyard back and forth, I won't walk on the sidewalks in the neighborhood because I had a severe fall a little over 2 years ago, my foot caught a wire handle on a manhole cover in the middle of the sidewalk and I hit my face on the concrete, I actually heard my fore head slam against the concrete, the nurse at the ER said she never saw such a huge bump, it took 6 months before it became almost unnoticeable so I'm don't want to risk that again. WKD talked to 2 men he works with that have severe diabetes and they gave me some good advice, I've already lost weight - yeah! For lunch today I roasted portabella mushrooms, Vidalia onions, red peppers and zucchini and I really enjoyed it. I've been eating a lot of fresh spinach and hummus , foods that I love so I think I will be ok. Thanks.

WKM - So sorry to hear that you've been in the hospital. I haven't been on this board for awhile. mr sunshine had a total knee replacement and we've been busy with 3x a week physical therapy.
mr sunshine and I are both type 2 diabetics. We've been able to keep ours under control for over 12 years. Most of the things that you listed you can't/won't eat are the things that we do eat. Of course, we try to eliminate sugars and carbs. Cutting carbs is pretty easy if you can substitute things. You said you like pita bread and so do we. You can either eat smaller amounts/portions of things or actually substitute something. We use a lot of small street taco type tortillas instead of bread for sandwiches (roll them up) or toast them in the toast to use for tortilla chips with salsa. That would also work for hummus. Most vegetable are okay, but watch out with corn, peas and some others that are higher in carbs. Instead of mashed potatoes, use riced/mashed cooked cauliflower and just make it like the potatoes. I've also made 'potato salad' by substituting cooked cauliflowerets instead of potatoes and add everything else you would to potato salad.
You said you don't like eggs, but do you like them scrambled? We eat scrambled eggs - saute spinach and chopped zucchini, onions in butter, when whip the eggs with a little whipped cream cheese and add to the veggies. You can also use this in the rolled tortilla shells.
Good luck! My most difficult thing to cut was pop/soda and ice cream. You can still have ice cream, but they say limit it to 1/2 cup, same thing with pasta - the amount that would fit into the palm of your hand. How many people eat that small amount of pasta for a meal.

How many people eat that small amount of pasta for a meal. That's where the kitchen scale comes in for me. I generally cook 112 g (2 portions). I may eat it all or may save some, but I always know what I began with. Watch the tomato sauces as well. Healthiest are 240 mg sodium and 4 g sugar (0 added sugars) for a 1/2 cup serving. So if you don't see these numbers figure out why. Some will trick you with a serving size of 1/4 cup. Another good site is Eat This, Not That, but they could be more focused on lower sodium and such than inflammation and quality ingredients from a diabetic perspective. www.eatthis.com/unhealthiest-pasta-sauce/Nutrition Action is great, but most of their stuff is not free. www.cspinet.org/article/whats-hot-healthier-ice-cream-aisleHmm, they actually have a ton of free stuff, and lots of best bites downloads. www.cspinet.org/article/snacks-make-healthy-eating-easywww.cspinet.org/page/shop-smart

I'm not diabetic, but I do eat low sugar and low carb (which oatmeal and tomatoes aren't, so you don't need to worry about them). Maybe look into the keto diet? There's a lot of helpful tips on what's low carb and substitutes you can use for your carby cravings, ie cauliflower rice over grain rice or almond flour instead of the regular stuff.

mr sunshine will always have trouble walking because of a stroke and then a broken femur on the same leg that had the knee replacement, but at least he doesn't have any pain now! We had several months of physical therapy 3x a week and they worked him hard, but were great people.
