Probably my favorite of the "Rocky" sequels. It's certainly not the best written or most dramatic of the "Rocky" films, but as far as popcorn entertainment goes, it seems to surpass all the other "Rocky" sequels. Mr. T is certainly memorable as the cartoonish-but-compelling Clubber Lang. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Rocky III (1982) - 2.5 out of 4 stars"Here, the Italian Stallion is trained by Apollo Creed after being dethroned by obnoxious Clubber Lang (Mr. T). Stallone's got a winning formula, but enough already."

Blimey.....was it that long ago? Makes me feel SO young.
Have fond memories of this. As a teen, Skipping out of college early with some flimsy excuse, . a couple of bratwurst hot dogs and a beer and then straight to cinema. Loved the first 2 rock movies and was slightly apprehensive pre-fight........, but this turned out fab, exciting, gripping, loud, BiG, emotional....... and brilliant on the big screen.
Coherent, great performances all round, Apollo, Paulie, Sly, Mr. T., Burgess, Adrian.....all the cast, and Eye of The Tiger was the perfect, punchy, punctuation.....which I swiftly bought on vinyl within minutes of coming out of theatre jaw-dropped.
Great cameo with Hulk Hogan, so much to enjoy....a real Movie movie, unashamedly theatric.....loved it.
I adopted Mr T's shouldered post-victory, growl with raised arms (below) whenever I scored a strike in my bowling teams for decades, often annoying or embarrassing my team-mates.
I still revisit flick often, and in retrospect, the only thing I could fault with it, and it's only a minor thing.....is some of the dialogue, not performance, of Adrian's beach pep-talk to Rock.....a bit obscure and cod-philosphy.....but delivered great by Talia.
I have a hankering to watch again soon now cos of your post, Ck. Buying bratwurst later today.

Mr. T found a successful post-ROCKY career, providing audio commentary for GPS ... voicing accurate driving directions. Sample:
"Turn left -- FOOL!"

I think Rocky II is the best sequel, but I still enjoy III. Clubber Lang was an obvious caricature of George Foreman.

Yeah, I have to agree...
I think Rocky III is probably the best... With IV and I close behind. II seemed too much like I. And V, well that's just the worst of the original five films.
III had everything...
- ALL the main characters from the franchise were in this. Adrian. Rocky Jr. Paulie. Mickey. Apollo. Duke. and perhaps a few others. - Rocky is on top, he hits an all-time low, and then has to regain what he lost. - Rocky and Apollo become friends and train together. - The greatest villain (maybe not fighter) in the franchise. Clubber Lang was totally mean and nasty. Nothing likeable about him at all. (Drago wasn't mean and nasty, just machine like) - Rocky's deeply afraid to fight, and has to overcome that fear in order to beat Clubber Lang. - Adrian finally becomes a strong character. - Features one of the greatest movie songs of all time. - He even has a wild fight with a crazy wrestler. Hulk Hogan was great as "Thunderlips".
Doesn't get any better.

It's one of the few third installments that's actually good. The critic weren't that kind to the film, but undoubtedly it was the iconic song "Eye of the Tiger" and Clubber Lang that pushed it over the edge to become a memorable installment. Otherwise, it would have been Rocky II again, which retreaded the same ground but was still decently good. Happy 40th anniversary.
