the second of the Jack Ryan movies and a sequel to The Hunt for Red October with Harrison Ford replacing Alec Baldwin and going up against the IRA, in particular Sean Bean's character, who wants revenge. Haven't read the book it is based on but the movie is a very well made political action thriller that even morphs into a home invasion film near the end. Sean Bean is introduced to American audiences here as well as his tendency to play villains. Samuel L. Jackson also shows up in a small role so we've got Han Solo, Darth Vader (his voice at least) and Mace Windu all in the same film. Also features a score by James Horner that feels like a precursor to his work on Braveheart and Titanic. When it comes to the Jack Ryan films it seems people only really mention Hunt for Red October and treat the other films as just "oh yeah those other ones" but the two Harrison Ford films are honestly very good as well.

I liked Clear and Present Danger much more than Patriot Games. But the latter does have its strengths, especially Sean Bean as the villain and James Horner's score. The attack on Jack Ryan's wife and daughter is a chilling scene.

Ford still remains my favorite version of Jack Ryan by quite a bit actually. The motorboat chase scene at night on the stormy seas near the finale was really intense and well done imo.

Patriot Games (1992), directed by Phillip Noyce This looks better now than it did at the time. It must be that current action films suffer by comparison: too frenetic, too much non-stop fantasy violence. Noyce, his photographer and editors know how to build tension and exploit it without going too far over the top. The pacing never goes slack and the sense of realism remains until the final scene with the boats, where implausibility reigns. Harrison Ford does that thing he is so good at, a classic American film hero: the thinking man, not a tough guy but able to summon the resolve to do what needs to be done, especially when protecting his family. Anne Archer is not squeamish in dealing with threats; she's the same sort of character who plugged an insane bunny-boiler in another film. Sean Bean knows how to be a rage machine. Cutting between him and the Ryan's perfect seaside Maryland home: I feel his resentment. Better than your average thriller: Jack Ryan is taken into the command center to view the results of his research. Satellite infrared views of the terrorist camp attacked. It's what he wanted, but being human, he is troubled when watching it. No motivation is given for the traitor among the Brits. Polly Walker fanclub! With Thora Birch, age 10. Also: James Fox, James Earl Jones, and Richard Harris. James Horner score. Available on Blu-ray.

Of the two Ford Jack Ryan flicks, I prefer Clear and Present Danger, but this is still a solid action thriller. I think both of these movies are overlooked gems in Ford's impressive catalogue.

Great film. Probably the most limited in scope but still a very well done film. I read somewhere long ago that Baldwin turned down the role because he was assured that the Shadow was going to be a huge hit.
