How do you follow up the biggest movie of 1981? With the biggest movie ever (until passed by another Spielberg movie in 1993). The purple font credits against black are creepy as fuck with that John Williams music. I'm an emotional wreck with each viewing. In year with so many memorable movies (Star Trek: First Blood, Conan the Blade Runner, The Thing), it still remains remarkable 40 years later. Spielberg has mentioned he wants to best remembered for this and Schindler's List. As much as it's been parodied, the flying bike against the moon is one of cinema's most stunning images. In searching for gifs, I stumbled upon some for an E.T. porno. Yeah, I need some bleach for my eyes now.

The Ringer's The Rewatchables pod covered it a few weeks back.
I re-watched it myself. Remains Spielberg's hallmark film imo. Every single shot looks so thought out & magcially effective. It's aged quite well.

Yeah. He really outdid himself with Schindler's List, arguably his finest accomplishment.

What can I even say about this that hasn't already been said? It's right up there with The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars for its defining influence on pop culture.

It’s fine. The iconic moments still work. I was never really crazy about it though.

It's a pretty fine film though I never connected to it like most. As a kid I was more into its "boy and his _____ friend" successors like T2, Iron Giant, and Free Willy.

I saw this in a theatre when I was well into my adulthood. Managed to get through the "resurrection scene" (everyone knew it was coming), but the goodbye at the spaceship made me a total wreck. I actually had to stay seated as the audience filed out because I did not want anyone to see the tears in my eyes. It also contains what may be the most heartbreaking exchange ever written for anyone forced to part with someone they love: "Come." "Stay."
