Well let me start with the good: 1.) It’s a great looking movie in terms of crisp cinematography, spacious sets, detailed production design, etc. Burton had some top people working on it. 2.) The performances – most notably Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic turn as Catwoman. 3.) Burton getting the freedom to cut loose more with his directing compared to Batman ’89. This is both a good and bad thing, but his direction is more assured and uncompromising here. And now the bad: 1.) Batman is even more of a supporting character in his own movie compared to Batman ’89. 2.) Max Shreck is one too many villains although there is nothing wrong with Christopher Walken’s work here. 3.) How did the Penguin’s goons get access to the Batmobile blueprints? 4.) How did those cats magically revive Selina after her fall? I think Batman Returns is a good Tim Burton film, but it’s not the film to watch if you’re looking for an ideal take on Batman. Roger Ebert said it best in that Batman is more of an enigma than a leading man in this film. But there are pleasures to be had here, along with flaws though, that make it worth a watch. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Batman Returns (1992) – 2 out of 4 stars
“Nasty, nihilistic nightmare movie about an abandoned freak baby who grows up to be The Penguin—a deadly threat to Gotham City, especially when he teams up with megalomaniac Max Shreck (Walken). Meanwhile, Batman finds a more personal enemy in Catwoman. Rich performances, dazzling production design, and occasional cleverness can’t make up for a dark, mean-spirited (and often incoherent) screenplay. Followed by Keatonless BATMAN FOREVER.”

Decent enough, even if it's not as good as its predecessor. I'm surprised how people say it's somehow worse that Batman Forever.

I love this movie. It’s as hammy and theatrical and overdone as anything you’ll ever see, but it’s entertaining and well-made.

This was my favourite Batman movie prior to Nolan. Burton combined his trademark gothic visuals with a stellar soundtrack from Elfman and some flamboyant performances from the leads. I used to regret that he didn't come back to do a third one.

There are some things in this that I like even more than the first, in fact, I prefer it in some ways. Still my favourite on-screen Catwoman and Penguin too.

It definitely benefits from a weirder and perhaps more pure Tim Burton style than the first movie. I much prefer Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne in Returns than the ‘89 movie. The plot does kind of slide in and out of different storylines. Shame that nothing came from that cliffhanger ending.

Would have been the best Batman movie ever if they gave Batman 20-30 minutes more screen time and took away screen time from Penguin.

10/10 Still one of the best superhero films ever made. Love the dark gothic look.

Despite some obvious flaws, I still really like the film. It's a good Tim Burton film even though it departs the fundamentals of Batman and his world. Michael Keaton is still good as Bruce Wayne/Batman although it's still a supporting character in his own film. The scene where Batman straps a bomb on a clown bothers me because Batman is not traditionally a killer.
Michelle Pfeiffer is excellent as Catwoman and is still my favorite interpretation of the character. The cats reviving her was silly and the nine lives was a gimmick, but she gave a great performance. Danny DeVito was well-cast as the Penguin, although Burton changed his character way too drastically. The Penguin is not a villain who lives in the sewer. Traditionally, he's a high-class, flashy mobster. Christopher Walken was his usual self as Max Shreck.
The production design is still good at capturing Gotham's gothic atmosphere. Despite all this, the scene where the Penguin bites that man's nose causing it bleed out still disturbs me. I can understand the parental backlash the movie received back then, but now most of the violence feels tame by today's standards.

Batman also sets that fire-breathing guy on fire with the Batmoblile which makes him a repeat killer. I remember my mom disliking the movie because of the dark tone and violent scenes like the Penguin biting that guy on the face. There was a talk show that had an episode looking at parents/kids being disturbed at the violent content of Batman Returns.:
