Mary Pickford and Lillian Gish were childhood friends, but what was the reason that Mary tried to never be left alone with Lillian?

Because Lillian's mother or somebody used to make some creepy comment about Lillian that she was too beautiful to live, so Mary didn't want to be too close to her in case the Angel of Death swooped down and took her as well as Lillian.

Angels of Death are notoriously sloppy about such things.

If i am going based on what it says on IMDB Lillian Gish trivia section, than that answer is wrong. I mean its close but its not accurate at least not based on what the IMDB trivia section says. But i guess its possible that there are more than one story about it.

Okay, so Mary heard Lillian's mother's comment that "the good die young," and she was afraid Lillian would drop dead in front of her.
I did hear it a little differently--the Angel swooping down to fetch Lillian, and presumably, anyone nearby, was the version I remember.
