Welcome to the cutthroat world of junior high chamber music competition. The series follows the journey of pianist Kōsei Arima, who lost the ability to hear his own playing, as he re-enters the music world after a two-year hiatus. With him are his next door neighbor Tsubaki Sawabe (a top-level baseball player), his best friend Ryōta Watari (a top-level soccer player), and irrepressible violinist Kaori Miyazono. Through Kaori's goading, Kōsei begins to play again, working through the pain blocking his ability to perform. The characters are all flawed and imperfect (unlike some anime), and they're just doing the best they can to move forward. Some of the minor supporting characters will like as not make you want to yell at your TV, and the overall story is one of sorrow and loss. There are several cats who appear throughout the series in small but important roles. Most of them are black. The soundtrack is outstanding (it probably helps to like chamber music). Some of the music related humor is a bit obtuse unless you're somewhat familiar with chamber music (e.g., why should the number 265 suggest to Kaoir that the stars will be watching over Kōsei's return performance?). All in all, an enjoyable experience.

I saw it and enjoyed it several years ago. I didn't pick up on the musical humor. My main critique is that the show is a bit humdrum until later on when we learn more of the characters' backstories.
