I grew up watching this comedy on HBO so it has some sentimental value for me. Tom Hanks, and especially Dan Aykroyd copying Jack Webb from the original TV show, are fun to watch, and Christopher Plummer makes for a suitably slimy villain. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Dragnet (1987) - 2.5 out of 4 stars
"Aykroyd is a comic reincarnation of Jack Webb, playing Sgt. Joe Friday's dense but dedicated nephew in this parody. Hanks is fun as his freewheeling new partner, with Morgan Webb's onetime sidekick, now promoted to captain of the L.A.P.D. Starts out quite funny, then goes flat...but the punchline is a howl. Aykroyd coscripted with Mankiewiez and Alan Zweibel."

Haven't seen it in forever but it was fun back in the day.

It's a funny movie and Dan Aykroyd's performance was spot-on. You can't watch an old Dragnet episode without thinking of Aykroyd's imitation of Joe Friday. I remember my dad once said "Dan Aykroyd has ruined Jack Webb forever!"

Better than it has any reason to be. Kind of wish it was a bit darker with its humor.

Quite a review from Siskel and Ebert about the movie. Siskel think's Aykroyd's work is Oscar-worthy while Ebert hates how the popular theme was given a hip techno update.
And I'd be remiss to not include the cheesy music video for the "City of Crime" end credits song which features Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks.

I NEVER understood why this movie got so much hate at the time. It’s really funny and still stays true to the show. So what did critics not like?

Kathleen Freeman's cameo was a riot. She also played "The Penguin" in The Blues Brothers.
