Even after 12 years of living here, I am still finding out about some surprise things that are different in Europe vs USA. What is the etiquette about paying the bill if a party of 10 goes out for dinner for someones bdays? Who pays? Whats the “usual”? Everybody pays for what they had? The bday person pays for all? The other people pay for the bday person? They all split it 10 ways? Any other options? Please help Its a group of friends, not a family gathering. Some know all the party guests some only the bday person. Going to a medium fancy Italian restaurant in NYC. What should I expect?

Pretty much my circle we all pay our own way, for meals.
Paying for drinks for the person of honour or whatever is still good to go.

In India, it's always the birthday person who will pay for the meal for everyone. it's literally unheard of that the folks who are invited are supposed to pay.

I always pay for the birthday person. It's their special day. Though that's usually been a 1 on 1 situation.
The tricky part is the 9 other people. The handful of times I've eaten in large groups, we split the bill. I think it's kind of a lame system since not everyone's dish is the same price, but people will act like you're a cheap prick if you say anything.

That is not your concern. I've never even heard of such a situation. We Poles, or any other Europeans, just hand an envelope with money in it.

I wish everybody realized it and we as a society developed some kind of a handbook that everybodt would follow. I dont drink alcohol (or any sugary drinks) and dont eat meat. So I will usually have tap water and eat my veggies while people slam dunk their third cuba libre/ heinekens and order ribs . Everybody should watch THAT episode ok Friends at least .

Actually I feel people are cheap pricks if they don't pay their shares and stick someone who didn't order as much with part of their bill.

If I’m invited to a birthday get-together at a restaurant and it’s specified that meals are provided I reasonably assume I don’t have to pay.

IF the birthday person is the HOST and the one who invited everyone to the party ... the host pays for all and just opens presents ! IF it's a party thrown by "the gang" .. the birthday celebrant eats free and the bill is split by who ate what dividing the Birthday person's meal among everyone. Presents still apply. leastwise, that's how me and my gang do it !
