Could only come up with a few
Was 1#
WENT THE DAY WELL? and THE WAY TO THE STARS. Maybe BRIEF ENCOUNTER and IT ALWAYS RAINS ON SUNDAY
What films make you patriotic?
And/or is patriotism/nationalism still a valid emotion (?) in our increasingly ffractured world?

It’s a wonderful life and mr smith goes to Washington. They remind me that people can choose to support others, help others.

I'm not even sure what the word means anymore, and suspect it might garner as many definitions as there are people to ask. To me, it means belief in a nation's stated principles, along with little tolerance and profound disappointment for any sacrifice of them for the sake of expediency, greed or whatever. As Judge Dan Haywood, Spencer Tracy put it very well when describing what a country is in Judgement at Nuremberg:
"It's what it stands for...when standing for something is the most difficult."
Probably the closest a film has come to embodying that - and inspiring patriotism - for me is All the President's Men. Two intrepid reporters seeking truth, one courageous editor and an equally courageous publisher, standing against the might of those at the levers of power when intolerable deeds committed in the abuse of that power were discovered. And after two years, a majority in both houses of Congress came to see for themselves how intolerable those deeds were.
It now sadly seems only a time capsule: perhaps the last period in U.S. history when belief in - and commitment to - our stated principles prevailed. Both the belief and the commitment have been eroding ever since.

I'll second Yankee Doodle Dandy and up the ante with 1776 (watched the magnificent dvd yesterday).
The closing "America" scene in The Deer Hunter.

I googled before I posted and was going by this simple one the quality of being patriotic; devotion to and vigorous support for one's country. For me it is primarily an emotion rather than a thought (in fact the thoughts I have often belie the emotion)

That sounds fine to me. Of course, the forms it can take cover a broad spectrum. At one end, there's the "my country, right or wrong/love it or leave it" form and at the other, the "this is not who we are/we're better than this" form (sorry for employing cliches, but they serve to illustrate). I've always considered it quite patriotic to insist on holding one's nation to the standards it set for itself, and speak out when it doesn't live up to them.

I know how you feel Doghouse, but I'm talking about South Africa, where the hope we once had of a better future for all is but a distant memory. Sometimes one just has to take Shelter from the Storm because A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall.
