Scheider was a seminal 70s star - making the most of his late shot at stardom and having a great run. He made an inauspicious debut in CURSE OF THE LIVING CORPSE... and graduated to better films in small parts (LOVING, KLUTE) But it wasnt until he was almost 40 that he made it as Gene Hackman's sidekick in THE FRENCH CONNECTION THE OUTSIDE MAN was an intriguiging hit man thriller with JL Trintignant JAWS consolidated his stardom - as well as reinventing the Summer Blockbuster - He was in a sequel too MARATHON MAN found him billed below Hoffman and Olivier but it was an excellent movie SORCERER a trippy remake of THE WAGES OF FEAR LAST EMBRACE an intriguing neo noir set in part in the Orthodox Jewish community With Janet Margolin It's Showtime! ALL THAT JAZZ gave him a superb role as the Fosse esque choreographer having a midlife crisis - he knocked it out of the ballpark here STILL OF THE NIGHT a Hitchcockian thriller opposite meryl The failure of 2010 seemed to damage his standing.... within a few years he was accepting featured roles. He remained busy for another 2 decades mainly in low budget action thrillers, plus THE RUSSIA HOUSE and THE NAKED LUNCH. He had a good supporting role in ROMEO IS BLEEDING and in THE RAINMAKER (probably his last A movie) What are your favourite Scheider films and performances?

The latest I've seen with Scheider was The Seven-Ups 1973 and I thought it was pretty good gritty mob vs police story with a very 70's feeling and is much more than it's famous long car chase.
Other favorites include, The French Connection, Jaws, Marathon Man, Last Embrace and Blue Thunder.

Met Roy's brother once at a party in the Garden State.
He shared with me a story about Roy helping his brother move into a new apartment in New Jersey.
As they were lugging a big sofa up a narrow staircase, another resident came down and spotted the actor, telling him that he loved THE SEVEN-UPS.
Roy graciously thanked the fan. But as soon as the guy was out of earshot, Roy said to his brother:
"Why is it they always remember my worst films?"

I was watching a bit of Jaw 2 on TV last night. He was everywhere during the 70s, like a male version of Karen Black. Quite good an actor, I got to say.

Usually I can't stand musicals, but All That Jazz is one of my favorite movies of any genre. It is one of a number of fantasy/autobiographies inspired by Fellini's 8½. The one by Youssef Chahine, An Egyptian Story (1982), contains an extended homage to All That Jazz (or maybe just plagiarism).

I usu@ly love musicals but had to suck it up to hang with All That Jazz. The fascination of Scheider as Bob Fosse, and his great dancing and acting, Ann Reinking, Leland Palmer, Ben Vereen , and great Fosse ensemble dancers kept me with it when the self indulgent heart attack and the death sequences made me want to run out screaming.
I love Marathon Man and Scheider gave such great balance to Hoffman and Olivier. I love the way he teeter tottered between the hard , in control older brother and master spy, and the victim, whose death was sought by many.
I love French Connection and think it is bizarre that both Scheider and KHackman were breaking out in this film. Hackman’s performance was more colorful, Scheider basically supporting.
