Mickey, Schmickey--Bugs Bunny, whose first full-fledged appearance in a cartoon short premiered today in 1940,* is the greatest American cartoon critter in cinema history! And his co-stars are pretty legendary, too.
*Although his official first appearance is sometimes in dispute, since a Bugs-like character appeared in a short in 1938--that's okay; if Queen Lizzie can have two birthdays, so can he.

Mickey Mouse is boring. WB says that the Tex Avery A Wild Hare is the first Bugs short. There was a couple shorts with a white, silent bunny. But I always believe 1939's Hare-Um, Scare-Um is the first BB. He's gray, he talks, he's 1000x smarter than his adversary, a grouchy hunter and a dim dog. He was also call "Bug's Bunny", by animator Charlie Thorson. Named after another animator at Warner's, Ben "Bugs" Hardaway. And Bugs took quite a while until he became the familiar Bugs, not really until around 1946-1948.
