Helen Mirren wanted to be a chorus girl when she regularly witnessed swinging legs upon the longest sea pier in the world, aboard the city of Southend-Of-Sea-Essex-England. She says you can catch a train all the way down the pier.

Early role with James Mason in Age of Consent 1969, an Australian movie directed by Michael Powell, based on the life of Norman Lindsay, an eccentric artist and his muses. British gangster movie The Long Good Friday 1980 with Bob Hoskins, she isn't the regular gangster moll, she is very much involved with his businesses. White Nights 1985 with Mikhail Baryshnikov. The first time I noticed her, and wondered what will ever become of her...

She first broke through as a stage actress. I remember seeing her stark naked in Marlowe's "Faustus" at The Mermaid Theatre. But my date, daughter of missionaries, did not take the hint. Maybe because I tried to impress her by taking her to a Chinese restaurant afterwards. Found out she had recently returned from China and I had to sit like a spare wheel while she conversed with the staff in Cantonese.

National treasure Danny Dyer made his television debut playing a battered teenage rent-boy opposite Helen Mirren in 'Prime Suspect'. He was later taken under the wing of playwright Harold Pinter. Mirren acted alongside Alan Bates, Malcolm McDowell and Laurence Olivier in 'The Collection' (1976) which was written by Pinter.
One time, Pinter was in a pub and some loudmouth was sounding off about how much he missed Hitler. Pinter put down his drink and smacked the guy square in the gang and mob. Needless to say, he got nicked by the ol' bill and said "it's a fair cop, guvnor", as he was just punching up a Nazi. Hear this story and more in 'Danny Dyer On Harold Pinter' with Ken Cranham, Keith 'Vindaloo' Allen, Big Dazzer and the London massive letting it all hang out for the bad boy of British theatre.

Turned 77 this week and still kicking ass.
She may still be "kicking ass", but sadly she is no longer doing nude scenes. Frankly, I would rather see her naked on screen than brandishing weapons of death.

A giant talent, with an amazing screen persona. I saw her once in a Beverly Hills pharmacy and was simply astounded at how small she is in person, because her on-screen persona is huge. She simply owns the screen. I've loved her in everything I've seen her in (even when the films aren't that good), and I hope I'm able catch up on a few that I've missed, all the way back to the beginning of her career, especially A Midsummer Night's Dream (1968), with Judi Dench, Diana Rigg, and David Warner, among others. A great actress.
