In his recent speech at Notre Dame, Alito said, “It is hard to convince people that religious liberty is worth defending if they don’t think that religion is a good thing that deserves protection.”
I don't need any convincing that religious liberty is worth defending while, at the same time, thinking that religion is not a good thing. And I'm sure I'm far from the only one. But Alito thinks that people who have little use for religion are the natural enemies of religious freedom.

I have no use for religion, but by defending freedom of religion, I am also insuring freedom FROM religion.

The thing is, Alito has a different definition of "religious liberty" than most people. To him - and to Christian conservatism - religious liberty means being able to use their religion to pass laws controlling and discriminating against other people, viz. criminalizing abortion, forbidding marriage equality for any other that a man and a woman, et.al. Also, for individuals to be legally able to discriminate at their work, in housing, and in hiring among many other things, if they have Deeply Held Beliefs, of course. IOW, bring back "We Reserve The Right To Refuse Service To Anyone. "Religious liberty for me, but not for thee" says the Right Wing Activist Supreme Court.
The word "liberty" in Alito's mouth means No Liberty for large numbers of Americans.

Not surprised. This is the same guy who referenced a 17th century jurist that supported marital rape and executions for witchcraft as his basis for overturning Roe v. Wade. He's just an asshole.

He misunderstands what religious liberty means. And that's scary for a SC justice.

Religious liberty DOES NOT mean the liberty to impose one's religious beliefs on others who believe differently. That is why we have SECULAR laws in this country.
