Speaking of traumatizing a population, there is the 1960 episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents titled “The Man From The South,” where, in Las Vegas, Peter Lorre offers Steve McQueen a bet that McQueen’s cigarette lighter won’t strike 10 times in a row. If McQueen wins, he gets a car. If Lorre wins, he chops off the little finger on McQueen’s right hand. Talk about 30 million viewers simultaneously breaking out in a cold sweat! I am told that Tarantino parodied that episode in one of his movies (I think the portmanteau movie in a hotel). Based on a short story by Roald Dahl.

They did a version of this for "Tales of the unexpected" as well.

I remember when she ended up getting killed by a patient that she was going to treat for Schizophrenia. My favorite doctor on the show during them days was Dr. Dave Malucci played by actor Erik Palladino. God bless you and him and Kellie always!!! Holly

The Simpsons with their Who shot Mr Burns? storyline. To date, its the only two-parter episode The Simpsons has ever done. They even had a competition to see if anyone could correctly guess who shot him. Even though there were clues throughout the episodes, NO ONE got the correct answer, which was Maggie .

I will never, ever, forget this: Arguably the show's ultimate WTF OMG moment, for long time fans at least who'd watched 'live'. I remember being online that night & it broke the internets. S6 was the final wrap, yet this cliffhanger into that was such a f'n buzz... & creatively with the explosion & whiteout, probably the show's creative production magic at its best.
