I'd say there's a strong case for Burt Lancaster.

I’m not sure, but Redford and Newman have both got to be up there.

Good candidates, all, and to borrow Cat's phrase, there's a strong case for any of 'em. Still, although such evaluations can be only subjective, I'd add that any list of possibilities would be incomplete without Montgomery Clift.

Part of the reason he become depressed is because his accident ruined his looks. After his accident he almost looked like a different person.

Clift, of course, had been dealing with emotional and substance abuse issues before the accident, and the latter certainly contributed to it. He remained a fine-looking man, but the surgical reconstruction robbed his face of the youthful, sculptural beauty it once possessed, and those intense eyes took on a lost and haunted quality, which actually contributed to his performances in later films. One such is Lonelyhearts (pictured below). Truly the Method actor, he found ways to make his personal demons work for him before the cameras.

When I was a kid I wished I looked like either of these guys. Well, with Ahnie's body.

I don't disagree about his talent and his eyes, but he was definitely not as attractive as he was before the accident.

Definitely close… In the 70s he probably was the definition of ultimate handsome man.
I’d have to lean on Cary Grant though overall. Gary Cooper and Richard Arlen are up there too from late 1920s and 1930s
