Requiem for a Heavyweight is on my watchlist. It had been on my list for quite a while. It exceeded my expectations 👍 I noticed it was written by Rod Serling. On top of being a huge Twilight Zone fan, I've liked every movie I've seen written by Serling so far.

It had been on my list for quite a while. It exceeded my expectations 👍 I noticed it was written by Rod Serling. On top of being a huge Twilight Zone fan, I've liked every movie I've seen written by Serling so far. It is well written for sure but the three main performances (Quinn, Gleeson, Rooney) are fantastic. I could’ve easily gone Quinn for best lead and it was a toss up for Rooney and Gleeson for supporting.

Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film. FIRST TIME MOVIE VIEWINGRequiem for a Heavyweight (1962, Ralph Nelson)This stunning film stars Anthony Quinn as a boxer whose career is over and faces life after boxing. Great supporting performances from Jackie Gleeson and Mickey Rooney round out this great film. 7.5/10Fourth of July (2022, Louis C.K.)This very low budget film is a wonderful modern character piece about a family with clashing personas. This is the best film of the year so far. 7.5/10Hostage (2005, Florent-Emilio Siri)Passable enough Bruce Willis actioned and probably one of the last he made at this level. 5.5/10Demonoid: Messenger of Death (1981, Alfredo Zacarias)This low budget film is in the horror sub-genre of the possessed hand horrors. It sees spouses who are looking for silver in Mexico find a 300 year old severed hand driven by a demon, chaos ensues. The effects are actually pretty good and it has some cool set pieces but is not that great overall. 5/10REPEAT MOVIE VIEWING
None this week WEEKLY FILM AWARDSBEST FILM: Requiem for a Heavyweight BEST ACTOR: Joe List - Fourth of July BEST ACTRESS: Samantha Eggar - Demonoid BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Mickey Rooney - Requiem for a Heavyweight BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Paula Plum - Fourth of July BEST EDITING: Carl Lerner - Requiem for a Heavyweight BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Arthur J. Ornitz - Requiem for a Heavyweight BEST SCORE: Richard Gillis - Demonoid BEST SCRIPT: Louis C.K. & Joe List - Fourth of July BEST DIRECTOR: Ralph Nelson - Requiem for a Heavyweight 10/10 - Perfection (or as close to it as possible) 09/10 - An Excellent film 08/10 - A VERY Good film 07/10 - A Good film 06/10 - A Solid film 05/10 - An Average film 04/10 - Below Average film 03/10 - A mostly bad film 02/10 - A mostly terrible film 01/10 - Awful through and through 00/10 - Not only awful but offensive too Hostage (2005, Florent-Emilio Siri) I agree, it's an okay enough movie, but nothing particularly special. 5.5/10

Felt like an interesting combination of Cronenberg's classic body horror films and his more recent dramatic works. 8/10
Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022, Derek Drymon & Jennifer Kluska) - There's some amusing scenes. Not really much to say about it. 6/10
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976, Clint Eastwood) - One of my favorites from Eastwood. 9/10
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012, Peter Jackson) - 7/10
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013, Peter Jackson) - 6/10
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014, Peter Jackson) - Only putting a comment on this one because I can sum them all up the same. Unlike Lord of the Rings, I've never bothered with the extended cuts of these because while they are okay movies, by the end I feel like all three wore out their welcome. 6/10

Hello again! Sorry to say none of yours this week. Mine: Midnight Run (Martin Brest, 1988) I really enjoyed this. A very fun crime/comedy/buddy movie that works in both the humor and dramatic portions. Great chemistry from the leads and all around fun. 8/10 Retaliation (Yasuharu Hasebe, 1968) Fairly entertaining, but sadly not a very memorable Yakuza flick. It's plot is fairly unoriginal and it's not stylistic enough leave much of an impression. It's not bad, just not anything I would recommend unless you're already a fan of the genre. If you are, it's at least fairly fun. 6/10 Forbidden Planet (Fred M. Wilcox , 1956) Classic science fiction film with extremely impressive effects and a young Leslie Nielsen in a far more serious role than anything else I've ever seen him in. Wonderful all around. 8/10 Glorious (Rebekah McKendry, 2022) A horror movie that takes place almost entirely in one room… a restroom stall in a rest stop. A man named Wes goes through a very bad breakup, and when he stops for a bit, a voice in a bathroom stall next to his informs him that it is a god and that it has an important task for him. J.K. Simmons is great as the elder god, and the movie is surprisingly funny and makes good use of its one setting. It seems like online reviews have not been that favorable for it, but I personally enjoyed it. That said, it's a little too ridiculous and over the top at times for its own good. 6/10 Nightmare Alley (Guillermo del Toro, 2021) Pretty good modern noir. Del Toro brings a visual flair to it and I think it has an absolutely perfect final scene, but the movie feels a bit over long and it feels like it could have used a good editor to make it better. 7/10 Midnight Run (Martin Brest, 1988) This is one of my favourite buddy movies. Still the best of De Niro's comedies. 8/10
Nightmare Alley (Guillermo del Toro, 2021) is on my watchlist. I just started reading the book, but I'm finding it a bit confusing.

It's a great example of what can essentially be done with a low budget and just one room reused in different ways. I know it's not a "great" film, but I'm ridiculously fond of it. 8/10

I always watch the extended editions of LOTR, but have never bothered with the extended Hobbits. They already stretch out the story too much as it is.
