First Time Viewing Nothing this week Repeat Viewing: Cube (1997; Vincenzo Natali) - This contained horror-thriller still works well, despite having been shot on an ultra-low budget. 7/10 Cube - I enjoyed it. 7/10

Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film. FIRST TIME MOVIE VIEWINGRequiem for a Heavyweight (1962, Ralph Nelson)This stunning film stars Anthony Quinn as a boxer whose career is over and faces life after boxing. Great supporting performances from Jackie Gleeson and Mickey Rooney round out this great film. 7.5/10Fourth of July (2022, Louis C.K.)This very low budget film is a wonderful modern character piece about a family with clashing personas. This is the best film of the year so far. 7.5/10Hostage (2005, Florent-Emilio Siri)Passable enough Bruce Willis actioned and probably one of the last he made at this level. 5.5/10Demonoid: Messenger of Death (1981, Alfredo Zacarias)This low budget film is in the horror sub-genre of the possessed hand horrors. It sees spouses who are looking for silver in Mexico find a 300 year old severed hand driven by a demon, chaos ensues. The effects are actually pretty good and it has some cool set pieces but is not that great overall. 5/10REPEAT MOVIE VIEWING
None this week WEEKLY FILM AWARDSBEST FILM: Requiem for a Heavyweight BEST ACTOR: Joe List - Fourth of July BEST ACTRESS: Samantha Eggar - Demonoid BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Mickey Rooney - Requiem for a Heavyweight BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Paula Plum - Fourth of July BEST EDITING: Carl Lerner - Requiem for a Heavyweight BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Arthur J. Ornitz - Requiem for a Heavyweight BEST SCORE: Richard Gillis - Demonoid BEST SCRIPT: Louis C.K. & Joe List - Fourth of July BEST DIRECTOR: Ralph Nelson - Requiem for a Heavyweight 10/10 - Perfection (or as close to it as possible) 09/10 - An Excellent film 08/10 - A VERY Good film 07/10 - A Good film 06/10 - A Solid film 05/10 - An Average film 04/10 - Below Average film 03/10 - A mostly bad film 02/10 - A mostly terrible film 01/10 - Awful through and through 00/10 - Not only awful but offensive too Hi, Dark Here I am. The Demonoid title sounded familiar, but I think I was mixing it up with this... Which I haven't seen either, but I'm kind of curious about it. Yours: Hostage 7.5/10 I remember enjoying it, but not much else. Mine: Out of the Blue 6.5/10 It's Neil Labute new movie, with Diane Kruger. It's a film noir/erotic thriller, it's about an ex con on probation who starts an affair with beautiful, rich woman, married to a powerful real estate guy, who's violent too, or so it seems....I noticed people seem to hate it, I thought it wasn't bad though. I mean, I'm easy for this type of movies and I like Diane Kruger, but still... It is predctabale, I mean, you guess where it's going from the first scene, basically, and it drags a bot in the first half, I enjoyed the twists though. The lead actor, Ray Nicholson, is actually Jack's son. He's not his dad, but he's O.K., IMO. Freddy's Dead: The Finla Nightmare 7/10 It's O.K., it's fun, it holds up well enough for me. The make up effects are still cool. Another Woman 9/10 It's Woody Allen's movie, with Gena Rowlands and Mia Farrow. It's about a writer, who lives a very controlled life. She rents an apartment to write her new novel in peace, and she finds that she can hear everything from the apartment next door, which is the studio of a shrink. Love it, I remembered it vaguely, it's really beautiful, touching too, IMO. The acting is fantastic, Gena Rowlands is really, really great. There's Gene Hackman too in it, Ian Holm... The Man in the Basement 7/10 It's a French movie with Berenice Bejo. It's about a couple who sells their basement in the building where they live to a man, who suddenly moves there, and he turns out to be a neo-nazi who's connected to a vast neo-nazi network. It's O.K., it gets pretty intense in the first half, then it loses it a bit, IMO. I'm not sure some plot points make much sense, in the second half.

By the way, have you heard William Friedkin is doing a new movie? A new version of The Caine Mutiny.

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare - Not a fan. I really don't like the added backstory they give to Freddy. 4/10 Another Woman - Strong performances in this one. 7/10 Oh, yeah. John Houseman, who plays Gena Rowlands character's father, is also really great. Yeah, I know Freddy's Dead is not well liked. I didn't mind it though.
