Just would have to remove the 2nd "I" and put an "X" as he would have been Edward IX.
"JUST" ? when it comes to replacing a skinny little "I" with a far-reaching "X" and having to remove all that gold stitchery and move the "R" to make room for the "X" ! Not as easy in fact as it seems in theory ! It was just a joke. That would have been a very skinny "X". And, from what I read, Ed could have messed up everyone and gone by the name Richard IV.

Yah ... I figured that but there are some who would have suggested it seriously and practically speaking, it just would not work !

Think of how much money we’d save if Edward had become king. But it was E IIR so they would have still had to change the initials on uniforms etc. Please stop ruining my jokes with your annoying facts!
