The funny thing about the Mandarin twist was that the trailers really sold him as a great villain. I actually didn't care at all about him being in the series one way or another as I actually had major doubts that he could ever work on screen... But then Marvel really sold us Ben Kingsley as a really threatening, well acted villain. I never would've been upset with the twist in the first place had they not advertised him that way. I mean, the trailers literally had half a dozen Kingsley lines that weren't in the movie. It was like "Hey, want a piece of cake?" "No thanks, I don't really like cake." "It's made with real cocoa and organic butter. Best frosting ever!" "Actually, that sounds great. Gimme!" "Sorry! There is no cake. Only pie."
And I don't dislike pie. Just don't get hyped on cake before offering it.
On a second watch through I was able to accept the twist just fine. What still bothers me about it is how removed Tony is from the story. Instead being a proactive protagonist he's out in Alabama hanging out with some random kid.
What i got wasn't that... So i felt cheated (i didn't care for mandarin so didn't bother the twist).
Then something happened, iron man, iron man everywhere. Now Iron Man 3 is, in my opinion, very good to great, in the grand scheme of things.
I always loved TDW so i will not go into that.
His perspective is not that of a diehard fanboy who slavishly adheres to the mythos regardless of how dated or anemic it may be in some places. Black's Iron Man movie asks very simple but challenging questions.
Does the suit make the man?
Can Tony Stark be a superhero, or for that matter, a decent human being without his vast array of directed energy weapons and other Stark Micro Munitions at his command? It's intriguing that Tony is his best self when hidden away in a suit of armor.
Is terrorism solely the province of religious zealots and non-state actors or, is it being appropriated by conglomerates, the media, and traditional government to cover up far more evil acts (such as human experimentation).
He manages to touch upon all of these really powerful questions regarding PTSD, bioethics and political while still managing to have fun with the character. Put it all together with great action set pieces, and Iron man 3 was a success in my book.
