Any fans of this John Wayne movie? Quite a change of pace for John if you're used to his western work and his previous work with director John Ford. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: The Quiet Man (1952) - 4 out of 4 stars"American boxer Wayne returns to his native Ireland and falls in love with a spirited lass (O'Hara)--but has to deal with local customs (including the payment of a dowry) and the young woman's bullheaded brother (McLaglen). Boisterous blarney, with beautiful Technicolor scenery, and equally beautiful music by Victor Young. This film was clearly a labor of love for Ford and his Irish-American stars. Maurice Walsh's story was scripted by Frank Nugent. Oscar winner for Best Director and Cinematography (Winton C. Hoch and Archie Stout)."

The Quiet Man / John Ford (1952). Republic Pictures. Cinematography by Winton Hoch and Archie Stout. “He’ll regret that to his dying day – if he lives that long.” The quintessential St. Patrick’s Day movie. American Sean Thornton (John Wayne) shows up in the small (fictional) Irish village of Inisfree. He reveals that he was born in the village but taken to America as a child by his widowed mother. Now, he wants to own the cottage where he was born and retire there. But he is not welcomed by everyone. Wealthy landowner and loud mouth bully Squire Danaher (Victor McLaglen) takes a dislike to Thornton, especially when Thornton tries to get acquainted with Danaher’s sister, Mary Kate (Maureen O’Hara). The film is not without its drawbacks. It is too long at 129 minutes, McLaglen’s blustering before getting a comeuppance is repetitious, and even O’Hara’s fiery redhead act gets a little old. But there is a good heart at the center, the comedy is never mean-spirited, it is one of John Wayne’s best performances, and the supporting cast is superlative – Barry Fitzgerald, his real-life brother Arthur Shields, Ward Bond, and Mildred Natwick, among several others. Also, I must needs mention the justly famous concluding episode that wraps up the picture (virtually repeated by Wayne and O’Hara 11 years later in the much inferior “McClintock”). John Ford won his 4th Best Director Oscar and Hoch & Stout took home the little naked gold guy for Best Color Cinematography. “The Quiet Man” was the only movie in Republic Picture’s 24-year history of feature films to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.

The Quiet Man (1952), directed by John Ford. I've seen complaints that this is a falsely precious portrayal of colorfully drunken, priest-ridden, always argumentative and brawling Irishmen. Hell's bells, all movies are fantasies, even the documentaries. I saw Oklahoma! once but never suspected the West to be populated by singing and dancing cowpokes. Do the Scots complain about Brigadoon (1954)? The sexual politics of married life is the center of the film. In the old phrasing, Sean has a right to his wife's body, and Mary Kate a wifely duty to comply. She stonewalls him until she gets her dowry. He's too proud to insist on sex, although there are signs she wouldn't mind his insistence. And beyond that: she doesn't want the neighbors to know about the shameful lack of consummation. Not until Father Lonergan gives her a stern lecture does Sean get his wedding night. Earlier, drunken Barry Fitzgerald views the broken marriage bed, with improper assumptions: "Impetuous. Homeric." Many of Ford's favorite actors here. I particularly like Ward Bond as the fierce, hard-fishing parish priest. Note that shirtless John Wayne looks nothing like a heavyweight boxer. And spot Festus playing the accordion at the tavern. My DVD is from 1999. The color is super-saturated and the image is just vile. There isn't a bit of fine detail and many scenes have vertical banding. "Digitally Remastered" it says on the case, and the encoding is a generous 8GB. I don't know if there are better editions. 60th anniversary next year: Blu-ray? (What's the deal with movie anniversaries anyway?) (Later: a better quality Blu-ray appeared).
